Budget build CPU question

I am in need of upgrading my desktop. Low end PC is all I need. Main uses will be surfing the internet, listening to music, microsoft office, watching tv shows and occasionally burning cds/dvds. Only game that I play is counter-strike 1.6. Only other games I might play is the new counter-strike: GO and diablo 3 when they come out. It's been a while since I have checked computer parts but I think I have it down to the three best candidates for the price.

Athlon II X2 270 Regor 3.4GHz Socket AM3

Intel Pentium E6600 Wolfdale 3.06GHz LGA 775

Intel Pentium G620 Sandy Bridge 2.6GHz LGA 1155

And the video card I've chosen..

EVGA GeForce GT 430 (Fermi)

Well, I really only need the CPU/MOBO/GPU/RAM. The budget is isn't much.

CPU - $75ish
GPU - $75ish
MB - $75ish
RAM - G.Skill 4GB - $25ish

Native resolution is 1600x900

What country are you in? (If USA, are you near a MicroCenter?) and do you plan on overclocking?

Live in the US. Not near a MicroCenter, unfortunately. Or any other store like Frys around my area. I don't plan on overclocking. Stock is plenty quick for me.

80$ for a x4 830 is the best cpu choice and overclock it, hurry ends in a few days.

Asrock extreme 3 for 85$ is a great board for the price.

and as mentioned above a 6770 for 58$AR is awesome, much much faster than a gt430

25$ ram

250$ for that setup is outstanding and will play the new Counter Strike/Diablo great.

I would say it is still a good deal, especially with a free game, but did anyone notice that that is a DDR3 card? Would be slower than a normal HD6670 wouldnt it?

Choose the Sandybridge G620 for sure!!! That leaves you capable of upgrading at a later date to some of the fastest CPU's on the market.. Any other socket/platform and you're stuck RE-upgrading the mobo when you realize you want more.

Budget machine builds really need to take upgrading more seriously. IF you aren't satisfied with the performance, you only need to upgrade the CPU. Wouldn't that be nice?

First up what is your current system? You might just be able to pop in a new cpu and gpu and call it a day, or just a new gpu. As far as CS 1.6, it plays well on amd athlon 800mhz slot A rigs lol.

I am in the d3 beta currently and I am running a gtx 280, runs the game maxed just fine. CS:GO looks A LOT like css so I am sure comparable cards that do well in css will do well in CS:GO.

Grab the E6600 and a 430 GT and a 400w PSU and 4GB ram for 30 bucks. gl

Yeah lol, 1.6 can be ran on onboard, I figured a card that ran CSS well would run GO pretty well too.

I'm upgrading the CPU/GPU/RAM/MOBO. Stumpy makes a good point with future upgrading capability of the G620. Is the G620 only being @ 2.6GHZ a big deal compared to the higher frequencies of the AMD/Wofdale?

My power supply is a 400W FSP group. Would it be able to handle the GTS250?

The G620 has higher IPC anyway, so it will still run faster than the Athlon or the old S775 wolfdale. There's zero reason to buy S775 for a new build, and little reason to go with AMD when the prices just don't add up.

Most 400W PSUs will run a GTS250 fine, particularly when paired with a not-very-hungry 32nm CPU with no overclock. Mfg recommendations are always a bit on the safe side, and I like that, but they have to take into account that the buyer might have a 400W PSU and an overclocked B3 Q6600 with 4 hard drives or something, and offer a lot of buffer room.

Basic mobo + G620 + 1 or 2 hdds + 1 optical drive + GTS250 is okay.

GTS250 is pretty old though, but it still runs good.

Good points. Think I'll go with the G620. Thanks. The GTS250 compared to the 8500GT I have now should be a nice upgrade though.
