"Multi-tasking Word & music" is typically <5% CPU usage on even the most basic Celeron CPU these days, so really it's only gaming that'll need the speed.
Maybe, but that's misleading. <5% CPU time, but how much cache, and how many threads? A Celeron sucks for desktop multitasking, even just with office work. You'll not make use of much more than an i3 with that kind of workload, but you can feel the difference up to an i3/A8.

Without any care for budget, you'd need lots of RAM (LGA2011), lots of cores (LGA2011), or high res and/or multimonitor gaming (several PCI-e 16x slots and cards), and/or a desire for very fast cores (overclocking CPUs and accessories), to even want anything more than an 1150 E3 or i7.

lol... Spreadsheets, music, and word.

If money is no object, just have a permanent LN2 system and have a constant 7GHz OC.

Also, you could just buy an entire mainframe and use that for all your super intense spreadsheets...

Well, he raises an interesting point. I've got a few games which don't tax my system. While I'm playing games, the system is running my 42" LED-LCD and my ONKYO 7.2 Receiver. I can't play games, do accounting and spreadsheets at the same time -- but if I could as a human, I certainly could with the hardware.

With the TV "on" and this web-page active, CPU usage on my SB 2600K-turbo@4.6 is 4%. Memory usage (16GB 1866) hovers around 25%, until after I've recorded a 2-hour movie through MC with its "DVR" function. Apparently, there's always been some sort of memory-leak with MC, so when memory usage climbs to 40+%, I simply need to "Exit" MC and restart it.

So I'm looking at wireless pan-and-tilt robotic cameras. When I replace my ISRT configuration with a Samsung 840 EVO, I'll have an extra HDD. Currently running two HDDs -- one being the system boot disk under ISRT; the other for buffering and recording video. So freeing the system-boot disk allows it to be used for a similar dedicated purpose with a potential security system using the pan-and-tilts from the same computer.

Not processing huge databases; I have a document-management system and there are various "OCR" projects for research (word and phrase scans, etc.) If I were "Folding" or something similar to that, maybe I'd want more.

But the only time CPU usage exceeds 50%: stress-testing with LinX. Maybe I'd be wise to do that every six months.

- Moar Coars .. but not at the expense of ST performance, rather miss a core or two and keep the clocks high.

- 4K eyefinity madness for quad crossfire 290's

- RAM, max out the board.

- RAID SSD storage, as much as possible.

- Huge UPS

- Occulus Rift 4K headgear (you can afford the prototype).

- Winning.

"Multi-tasking Word & music" is typically <5% CPU usage on even the most basic Celeron CPU these days, so really it's only gaming that'll need the speed. And if money is no object, then for realistic gaming use, just go for an i7-4770K with top of the range GFX card. For most games though, an i5 4670K does just fine at +4GHz.

TBH though, unless you spend all day running artificial benchmarks, all this talk about blowing vast sums of money on 12 cores or 40 core servers, etc, just for the sake of it, is pretty much pointless even on the newest "next-gen" games. It's like buying a Ferrari but instead of taking it on a race-track, you only ever just drive around a crowded town never doing more than 30mph and never driving on any straight stretch of road longer than 200m...

Spend vast sums on an extreme machine if you want, but be aware that unless you have heavy usage needs of easily parallel threaded apps (eg, +10hrs of video encoding per day, or heavy 3D rendering, etc), it simply won't run many games faster at all vs a "normal" i5/i7 quad-core at +4Ghz because games do not scale very well beyond 4-8 threads (which is unlikely to change for at least another decade). 4 cores at 4.2-4.4GHz are still going to run many games faster than 1,024 cores at 3.4Ghz (unoverclockable Xeon's) in reality. You're far better off buying a normal i5/i7 CPU and the best GFX card and large 512GB-1TB SSD than wasting it on enterprise server hardware just for gaming.

This makes a lot of sense actually, and the 4770k looks perfect!

Really I need suggestion of an extremely nice CPU, Mobo, GPU, and Ram... all built for gaming... I don't want to have to change anything for at least 3 years. and I want to dual pump water cool it...
one loop for the CPU. And one loop for the Ram, and GPU... Looking at the Switch 810 to house it... a 140 Rad for the CPU, and a 280 Rad for the GPU and Ram?
Something to that effect, and make it all custom colored, wires and loops and everything. Just a fun project.

Contact Intel directly to package you some of their best binned, highest core count, Haswell (Or ES Broadwell) chips in an unlocked format.

Stock up on LN2 and a LN2 loop cooling system.

Enjoy your 10kk+ USD well spent

Bonus: Hire programmers to make you an OS, applications, games, etc. that makes use of that system as efficiently as possible

This is a poor time to build a new system on the -E platform imo. The six months until Haswell-E mentioned earlier in this thread is a bit optimistic, the roadmaps for HW-E indicated the fall of 2014. So we probably get HW-E in September.

You could always get your video cards now and a more affordable Z87+Haswell system, then dump it when HW-E comes out, of course 20nm GPUs will be out around September of next year as well, so... Then again, initial 20nm GPUs will probably be pretty disappointing performance improvements over the current 28nm big boys like 780ti or 290X, think 30% or so like we saw with the first 28nm cards that launched compared to 580 & 6970.

Just get a 4960x, Rampage IV Black and a pair of 780tis if you want to build a super machine and then enjoy  About $3000 for that and another $1000 if you are going to setup a loop for those parts. No idea if you already have a case, PSU, SSD etc. Probably looking at $5000 if you need those parts as well.

- ..dont mind me asking, what research?

For at least ten years, I've been convinced that I discovered a secret to one of the greatest mysteries -- and crimes -- of the 20th century. I was fairly new to the topic of interest at that time -- an "armchair" curiosity to me. I wanted to find a short-cut.

Two persons-of-interest had written books. The manuscripts were subject to a severe vetting process by the institution that had employed them. One of them likely -- most certainly -- had a common "personality disorder" more frequent to people in the entertainment industry. He "couldn't help himself" -- he had to flirt with the scrutiny.

The two had used a third book and author as a "key" to their communications -- embedded in those books under the very noses of their reading public, and under the very noses of those approving publication. Some of the books are memoir; some are fiction. The third author's book was released as a movie. Then, one of the stars in that movie bought up the rights to it in reaction to "the Big Event."

Back around 1999, a fire-department employee in LA was charged with the crime of arson and murder. He had written a "novel." The novel became "evidence."

You may be familiar with a tradition of cinema and fiction that included "Three Days of the Condor" with Robert Redford, or a more recent TV mini-series entitled "Rubicon." Redford's character "read books" of all kinds, because they contained "certain information" of "intelligence value." Similarly, Will Traver's discoveries in crossword puzzles and other sources were central to Rubicon's plot.

I'm pretty sure you can figure out a more specific focus. I'm more interested that enough people can see and understand what I've found, than getting "name recognition" for the discovery, but nobody else had figured it out. It all started as a hunch, and it was a stroke of luck to find what I did. And if you dig deep enough, you can probably "out" me on this forum like Scooter Libby did to Valerie Plame. I'd grown comfortable with "BonzaiDuck," though. :awe:

Please give us a Xmas present and let us know what it is! The suspense is killing us!!!!!!

I sense a Lot of Sarcasm here... >.> But at the same time Idc lol So I will! It's in 2 different sites shopping carts and wish lists so give me some time to compile it all into an excel for ease of use and I can use that to modify it if needed by the time I actually purchase it.

You've got some spare cash but no real money. If you did you'd get a custom boutique pc and get them to ship you the parts if you wanted to assemble.

Lmao, Nice assumption but no. It's more for the hobby of it. Building it myself is 85% of the fun

Done btw, gonna upload the Excel now.

Any thoughts on adding something else? Or maybe a different CPU or Ram?

I really like that MoBo, and I definitely want 64GB of ram of course. Was hoping to liquid cool my Ram but mehh, doesn't seem necessary.

Like we all said -- it's your money. I will give a Pope's Xmas blessing on your choice of a PSU. Wonder why you would want two EVO's of that size, when you could buy the 1TB model, but there are always reasons.

I see you're going with water-cooling, perhaps a good idea: I think that CPU has 130W TDP? You say you want "a hobby," so it's obvious you're going into it feet first -- with a splash!

Now . . . not sure why you're buying 64GB of RAM. I've only got 16GB, and the system seldom uses more than 50%. Maybe you're going to bid on a contract with NSA so you can read my e-mail and that of about a million other people, and you want the computer to do the "reading."

You can certainly do that, but it seems like overkill. Let me explain something. Whether you overclock the RAM or use its recommended, default settings, you'll want to test it thoroughly to weed out any bad modules -- it happens, even with the best and most popular kits. Corsair is fine; I use G.SKILL now.

You'd probably test with a freeware(? maybe) program called HCI-Memtest. You want to run the program for "1,000% coverage," or ten passes of all tests against the RAM. It took me five days to complete the 1,000% test with 16GB on an i7-2600K@4.6Ghz system. Five days! Figure double for 32GB, and quadruple for your quad-channel 64GB. I'm jus' sayin', bro!

Next thing -- the Zalman fan controller. First, it appears to be "all manual." Looking at your radiator choices, you'd at most use five fans for that. Instead, check your Rampage IV "Black" specs and details about the fan-headers on the mobo. ASUS native fan-control is now quite nice.

If you want to buy a controller, and you figure money's no object, there are some out there that are auto-thermally controlled with configuration settings you can choose. Of these, some will even control your water-pump. Take a look at www.frozencpu.com and www.sidewindercomputers.com . The trick is to buy a controller that has its own processor, communicates with your mobo via internal USB. For the kind of rig you're building here, that's what I'd look for.

As for the case -- that's your choice, and NZXT makes some nice ones. My own choice for the last four years has been the nominal $90 CoolerMaster HAF midtower, but I use air-cooling -- for which I want a maximum airflow, minimum noise, and minimum number of fans (Works for me!) You could also spend a pile more on a case. Nothing wrong with that, either. But pick the case to match your cooling needs as well as other hardware.

BA-LEEVE ME! I can tell you how to spend money on some of these parts: I've toyed around with all of it!

I was thinking two 512GB in Raid would be faster than the 1TB for the SSD...?

I love the case haha looks and compatibility and expandability etc,

Going to look into those fan controllers, but with this set up I am planning on 10 fans for the Rads alone... Push/Pull on both rads.

I understand there isn't really a "reason" for any of this, but I love the hobby and being able to show it off, modesty isn't a big determining factor in showing off a PC lol

You'll get a lot of opinions about RAID0 and SSDs. It was not long ago the case that RAID0 made it impossible to implement the TRIM function -- to clean up the drives and maintain performance. This may have been overcome with newer chipsets and Win 8. Look into it.

You might not notice the difference between a single SSD and an SSD RAID0, but I have no direct experience to say. Single drive will give you up to 520 MB/s throughput; a RAID0 -- possibly 900 MB/s, maybe a little less. Maybe you might notice the difference. But the difference between a single SSD and a RAID0 or RAID5 with HDDs would only narrow with a comparison to maybe four HDDs. The HDDs themselves each have a mechanical limit below SATA-II speeds, even on an SATA-III controller.

For me, it doesn't seem worth it, but if I knew the TRIM problem had been overcome, I might change my mind. The risk of losing everything in RAID0 for the SSDs would likely be much, much lower, given their MTBF and expected lifespan.

You probably might want to look at the Aquacomputer or Aquaero controllers. The expensive $200+ model is a nice gadget with visual features, but the $80 item might have the same controller features and still provide the visuals through software.

Before you buy the fan controller, look at the specs and especially the Instruction Manual description of the Rampage on-board thermally controlled fan feature. A board that expensive is likely to have as many as ten fan headers. Heck -- lemme check . . . Yeah! I was right: there are eight (8) on-board fan connectors -- possibly all thermally controlled or BIOS-adjustable; three (3) thermal sensor ports -- with which you could control other fans among the eight from different thermal readings off the board or components.

Go ahead and spend the $80 to $200+ if you want, but I wouldn't spring for the fan controller until I was sure the motherboard didn't take care of your whole enchilada. Simple is so much better. Total control of all fans through the motherboard without extra hardware -- all readable and comfigurable through the ASUS software in windows, and otherwise thermally controlled just through the BIOS alone.

If you actually want to vary your waterpump throughput thermally, you might have to get the Aquaero. I'm just not sure that makes a lot of difference.

If you're not going to overclock the Ivy Bridge -E, you could just ditch the idea of watercooling and get a top-end heatpipe cooler. I see you want to put your dGPU into the watercooling loop, so maybe you've already made that decision. I forgot how many graphics cards you ordered. If it were me, I'd just get either the top-end NVidia card or "second-best." With SLI, second-best would be stellar. Up to you, though.
