I was just curious if there are any places that sell laptop cases/motherboards etc... So someone could build their own laptop. Does anyone know of such a place?
There's a guy on the LaptopLogic forums that I think does it. I don't know if he sells the components for consumers to build, but I think he orders barebones kits to build & sell. Pop on over to http://www.laptoplogic.com/forums/ and start a thread, the guy's username is fords8 or something like that.
Or you could get a compaq parts list and buy the spare parts and put one toghether that way, but I would cost 3x as much as one pulled from a store shelf and you get a warrenty too.
Asus has been selling Laptops for some time now. http://usa.asus.com/products/notebook/nbindex.htm
I wonder if they are overclockable? But I know they have recieved some pretty nice reviews in the past.
I'm not thinking of it to be more cost effective. I'm just looking for a better upgrade path. I don't intend on getting another laptop for at least another couple of years since my Dell 600m is running great. But if I were to get another laptop I'd be looking for a better upgrade path simular to my desktop systems now.
It looks like if you are looking to spend under $1000, and don't want a desktop replacement, going to Dell or something might be the best. If your looking for a fast laptop like Alienware, then one of these "ODM" might be a good place to shop. Of course, buy at your own risk. And hope nothing breaks
What we need is some laptop motherboard standard so you can buy a case you want and shop around for the mobo and other parts like you can for a desktop. I guess laptops being so small and cramped for space its hard to do something like that. Coboc looks pretty good.
Personally I like Alienware laptops but once you go that route what is the point of having a laptop if it can't run for a couple of hours on a battery and weighs 12+lbs.
