So far so good...

My first DIY computer is finally up and running (well, at least jogging) thanks to everyone here.

If the build was stage 1 I am at stage 2 which means, stage 2 questions...

1. Re. monitor delay - when scrolling down on a webpage, there is a very noticeable delay. How do I get rid of this? Why is this happening?

2. Re. drivers - do I install all of the software and drivers that came with the components first and download updates or do I download the latest drivers and updates of each and install those first? Which ones in particular (from my components list) do I have to update?

3. Re. autorun - when I insert a software/driver/etc. it does not autorun. I have to go into my computer and manually click on the install icon to get it going. Why is it doing this?

4. Re. drive lettering - instead of having your normal A, C, D, etc. I have (I think) 6 drives lettered - among them 2 (which don't exist) are marked as "removal drives" (can't remember exact wording) - why is this? Can I get rid of them?

5. Re. XP - MS won't let me install SP2.

My specs are:
DFI Ultra-D NF4
Corsair Value 1GB (512x2)
Athlon64 3000+
Leadtek 6600GT TDH
Hauppauge PVR250
Seagate SATA 200GB
NEC 3520A DVD (IDE1 master)
Pioneer CRW-F1 CD (IDE2 master)
Mitsumi 7 in 1 Floppy & Card
OCZ Powerstream 420W
Coolermaster Wavemaster
Sony SDM-HS93 19" LCD

1. not too sure

2. download the latest driver and install those. then you won't need to install any drivers from the disks or cds, but you may want to install the software from the cds or disks

3. does the cd have an autorun file on it to let it autorun? i think there is an option somewhere to enable and disable this feature, but i forgot. i will look for it and get back to you.

4. are they from one of those digital card readers (memory cards for a digital camera)?

5. you need to have sp1 and other updates as well before you can install sp2

1. try updating video card drivers

2. first install eithernet (skip if the internet already is up and running), then install dx9.0c, then chipset or video card- everything else after that. you should download the latest drivers from the manufacturers website so for your mobo and vid card drivers just use www.nvidia.com to get 'em

3. dont kno off hand

4. you can change the letters and such right click on my computer, then manage, then go to storage\ disk management

5. install all the other updates first before you install sp2

1. That's definitely your VC drivers.

2. You shouldn't need to update any drivers except for the MB and VC. No need to use the CD's, just D/L the latest ones off the web.

3. No idea. I have the same NEC burner and didn't have to do anything.

4. I'm guessing that is your Mitsumi 7 in 1 Floppy & Card.

5. Same as above

Re. Drivers - which ones do I have to download and install?

On DFI site, there are: BIOS, Diamond Flash Image, Smart I/O Driver, NVIDIA System Driver, Audio Driver, LAN Drivers
On Leadtek, there are: GeForce PX 6800/6600/6200 Series
On Nvidia, there are: Version: 66.93
Etc: Hauppauge drivers, DirectX 9.0c, XP

Are there any driver updates for drives that need to be made?

To have a completely nice, clean system, I would have all my drivers on CD, all the patches/SP's on CD, in fact, everything before I start dl off the net. Then, install progs, and just before you get to going on to the net, install a firewall.

imo - install in this order if you have CD's to hand:
XP
SP's/patches
Chipset drivers
DX9
VGA
Monitor if needed
Sound
Any other hw that needs drivers ie printers/cameras etc.

Then SW.
Then Antivirus and Firewall - last.

Now you can surf

Oy. You've got a lot of questions, and don't appear to be very good at finding answers on your own.

You need to install:

Drivers for your motherboard/chipset. You should get these from either the motherboard manufacturer, or from the chipset manufacturer (in your case, NVIDIA; these are the "NForce" drivers).

Drivers for your video card. In your case, these are also from NVIDIA, and you want the latest "ForceWare" drivers (66.93 being the latest official release; there are also beta versions floating around. See the drivers sticky in the Video forum for more detail than you probably want about different driver versions).

DirectX 9.0c. You can get this from Microsoft, either by downloading it from www.microsoft.com/directx, or by running Windows Update.

Any applicable Windows Update fixes. You will probably want Service Pack 1 and 2, and any other security fixes it recommends.

Drivers for any other hardware in your system. You do not need separate drivers for devices built into your motherboard; these are installed along with the motherboard drivers. But if you have a PCI sound card, a video capture card, PCI RAID controller, etc., you probably want to get the latest drivers for them.

Are there any driver updates for drives that need to be made?

Huh? English, please.

About question 1, I had the same thing happen last night while building my system. It was even doing it in device manager, when opening and colapsing devices. I was pretty nervous that there was something wrong, but after installing the 66.93 nvidia drivers on my new 6600gt everything was square.

This is all new to me. I'm not new to computers but new to building computers on my own. I've learned so much in the last week or so talking (more like, asking) to you guys. I have been asking EVERYTHING because I didn't want to screw up the system - better to ask (and annoy you guys) than to have to deal with a dead computer.

THANK YOU everyone for helping me along. Your advice and info have been invaluable.

Are there any driver updates for drives that need to be made?

I was just asking if the drives (dvd, cd, floppy) needed updated drivers.

Which driver is the best one to use for my video card? If I go to a new one, do I uninstall first or install on top?

Right click on the drive lettering for the Nec and enable autorun (i think it's in properties)... yep it's really that simple.

Just get the 66.93 driver (VC) and the "chipset" drivers (MB) from nVidia and install.
No need for "drive" drivers. Windows XP already has them.

Normally caused by lack of motherboard chipset drivers. Install the Nforce 4 Motherboard drivers.

2. Re. drivers - do I install all of the software and drivers that came with the components first and download updates or do I download the latest drivers and updates of each and install those first? Which ones in particular (from my components list) do I have to update?

Drivers.. Install chipset first (includes agp/ sound / usb etc) then latest video drivers off nvidia site, and anything else.
