you could make a list for others to critique...that's the easiest way. you can start off with this:

CPU: X2 3800 - $295
motherboard: Epox 9npa+ Ultra - $105
GPU: Sapphire X1900XT - $459
RAM: 2gb kit of g.skill value ($145 - CAS 2.5)
hard drive: Western Digital SE16 250gb - $96
psu: fortron 450 w - $50
optical: NEC DVD Burner - $40
case: Cooler Master Centurion 5 - $54

these parts comes out to $1144

obviously there's a lot to change about this...the PSU should be a bit beefier...maybe the cpu should be a 4400+...the motherboard is nice but i guess you could buy a more "premium" one so you can use up the rest of the $350 of your budget....or you could save it for a future upgrade

CPU - AMD Opteron 165 Denmark ($329)
RAM - CORSAIR ValueSelect 2GB (2 x 1GB) ($144.81)
Motherboard - MSI K8N Diamond Plus Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 SLI X16 ($221)
HDD - Western Digital Raptor WD1500ADFD 150GB 10,000 RPM 16MB Cache Serial ATA150 Hard Drive ($282)
Vid Card - eVGA 256-P2-N517-AX Geforce 7800GT 256MB 256-bit GDDR3 ($294 after MIB)
PSU - SeaSonic S12-500 ATX12V 500W Power Supply ($129.99)
Optical Drive - NEC 3550A ($47)
Sound - Creative Sound Blaster Audigy2 ZS SB0350 ($82.00)
Case - Whatever you want.

I know 150 GB is not much, but I think its plenty for most people. I feel HDD speed is just as important as RAM or CPU speed. The 7800GT is all you need for games at the moment, there has not been a big array of impresive games lately.

Prices are all from Newegg and include shipping.

What exactly do you plan on doing with the PC? There are many ways to build with $1500.

There is no reason not to get a top of the line video card with a 1.5k budget. Forget the GT's, get a x1900xt.

1500 is a load of money! You can even make an x1900xt Crossfire rig with that!

Or 1 x1900xt and buy a a Viewsonic VP930b

Don't buy harddrives retails.... keep watching the hotdeals forum, you should be able to get them for far less (after rebates).

thanks fire400...OP, i was assuming you won't overclock. if you will, get an opteron cpu and if you really wanna blow your money and spend $1500 total, get a DFI Ultra-D motherboard instead of the epox, an opteron 165 instead of the x2 3800 for the cpu and just add a water cooling system to do some mad overclocking...but since you're newb at this posting business, i doubt you'd want to go that route

ok trigger it's true he didn't do his homework and he doesn't really deserve the help but still, i thought these forums were to help others, not to keep people (like you) from helping others (like me). at school, don't you and your friends "help" each other with homework? we can share our knowledge for him to benefit and for us to feel good about ourselves cause we helped a fellow person

If he does not try helping himself, we should not help him.

He doesnt even tell us what the PC is for.

General usage. Gaming, moderate overclocking, encoding, multi-tasking, etc. On that note, not too much has changed since I left.

Video Card - eVGA 7800gt CO SE N516 $250-$270 ish
PSU - Enermax Liberty 500w $110
Enermax Seasonic S12 600W still the hotness?
Optical Drive - Nec ND-3550A $36-$40

Is there still a problem with the Seasonic S12 wire length and the P180?
Sound - Creative X-Fi XtremeMusic $110?

Since of you were talking about monitors, is the Dell 2005fpw/2405fp still great values with coupons? Also, give me some suggestions for monitors other than dell, preferably 19"+
