I'm looking to replace my old 750mhz box. Right now, I use it for school stuff (some pretty intense comp sci programming) and browsing/email/watching stuff. However, I'm getting back into gaming and want to be able to play something that isn't 4 years old.

Things to know:
[*]I already have two monitors and do not need speakers (I like headphones).
[*]I'm not sure whether to go Intel or AMD, but favoring Intel at the moment.
[*]I think I'm going to get the 9800 Pro from either CompUSA or Best Buy. Sidenote, do you think they will actually ship on 4/1?
[*]I really like the Lian-Li cases and want to go with a pretty small, compact case.
[*]I am all for QUIET. My box right now is wayyy too loud and annoying.

Thanks, I appreciate any help you can give.

SLK800 + 80MM Sunnon 50CFM-$45 svc.com
Epox 8RDA+ - $99 mwave.com (Has onboard soundstorm DD 5.1/Firewire/LAN)

Thanks guys! More input would be great -- especially on the 9800, will it be available?

Thats what I would go with too, except I'd upgrade to a faster P4 chip and the ATI 9800. I don't really know when it will be out for retail but should be soon.

Oh yeah, it wouldn't hurt to check out Alienware computers for that price range of yours or maybe even a really nice Dell

Quiet? $2000? Just wanna say that there's a Radeon 9700 Pro card that's completely sound-free. (totally passively cooled). Review Atlantis 9700 Pro Ultimate. Looks pretty cool!

svcompucycle has these Zalman fans that are only 20dBa that blow 28cfm's of air. I personally haven't used them, but Panaflos at 21dBa (what I have) are very quiet. Heatsink: Yes, the slk-800 has really good reviews. It's a bit costly though. There's even an slk-900 heatsink that's out. They take 92mm fans, which blow even more air at low noise levels.

Quiet drives: Try getting a serial ATA Barracuda 5. They have 8mb cache, and Barracudas are the quietest of all.

If youve got that amount of money then i would go with:

nForce2 mobo (Perhaps Asus A7N)
3200 Corsair XMS memory (1gb)
a 2400/2600 AXP cpu (T-Bred B)
a 9800 (Perhaps the one with the blue leds :cool
120gb barracuda, maybe 2
all the other obvious basics.

Oh and an Audigy 2 EX Platinum

Dan

get a barracuda, everyone says they are silent, and i have to say WD's are very NOT silent, even though the WD's are faster, with 1 gig of ram, who cares?

dude if you really want to spend 2000 on a computer id wait untill they come out with the radion 9800 with 256mb ddr that will be a sweet card. well as for every thing else i agree with most of the other posts. Exept for the guy who recomended dell. it wont really be hard to spend 2000 on a computer but with a little research you can esaly get a really really good system for under 1000. I only spent $550 on mine and i can run every game on the market with good fps. if you wanna spend 2000 definatly go water cooled hehe that whould be preaty tight. good luck with that.
