Hi,
I have several questions regarding the 7820X + X299 platform:
  • Are the boot times still longer than 30 seconds? They were reported to be very slow in initial reviews.
  • Is a Noctua NH-D15 sufficient for cooling at stock? Won't overclock the CPU or RAM.
  • Is the Asus Prime X299-A mainboard a reasonable choice?
  • Does the processor and the chosen mainboard work well with Windows and Linux?
  • Will the X299 be a bottleneck (1 NVME M.2 Samsung EVO 960, 1 AMD RX 560, 1 SATA HDD)?

Main use cases will be software development including VMs and video streaming/encoding.
I know that the AMD Ryzen would be sufficiently powered but it is not an option in this case.

Thanks

1. I don't see that with my current setup + BIOS.

2. Passable if you don't OC, but would stringly advise 240mm radiator AIO cooler or better for SKX.

3. Yes.

4. Sure, why not.

5. Nope.

Why is Ryzen not an option?

What about Threadripper? Threadripper has an 8 core option that might suit your needs (not sure if it is available yet).

What about Threadripper? Threadripper has an 8 core option that might suit your needs (not sure if it is available yet).

Regarding Ryzen:
There is still a not so small chance that the processor is affected by either the gcc bug (use case software development...) or the idle/low power MCE reboot bug in Linux. I do have a R7 1700x at home that shows the second problem at stock. Overclocking with manual voltages solved that and I'm really happy with that system. Unfortunately, the new PCs are for work, and there overclocking and fiddling around with settings are not an option - at least not for my colleagues ;-)
Furthermore, I do not think that our suppliers are able to make sure that the CPUs won't have these specific bugs.

Regarding Threadripper 8 core:
AFAIK it is not availble yet and the 7820X fits the use cases better in this price bracket. The TR 8 core has more PCIe lanes and I do like the X399 PCIe lane layout. But with just one NVMe and one hard drive the DMI link won't be saturated (I did some calculations for that in the meantime). And the 7820X has more CPU power at stock.

To sum it up: If there were not the gcc bug and the idle reboots Ryzen 7 would be sufficient ;-)

I am going to echo Thunder in regards to non-oem system builds. I mean there are few circumstances where it doesn't matter. But basically if it is going to be a production system, cost shouldn't be concern, not in the silly John Hammond spared no expense thought process, but enough to actually look for systems that do the Job. In fact Dell (where my business orders from) has a crazy amount of Configuration options for Precision Desktops that fill this "x299" niche without actually using a a prosumer "extreme" platform and supports single and multi CPU options and works with ECC if needed. Pretty sure most of the OEM's including oddly enough Apple offer similar products.

Dell also sells Ryzen 7 1700x powered workstation which would give you full support in case of issues.
