Building a gaming pc

I will have a budget of around $2000 dollars. I was hoping of anyone could give me the best bang for the buck using newegg.com or any other good services. Prebuilt or just parts is fine as my friend can set it up for me if needed. The computer will mostly be used for gaming as I usually stray away from consoles these days.

Is the 7900 worth it for the cost over a 7800? Also is there any good 200 gig HD's that won't cost too much? I was hoping to go with AMD this time but I have no idea which kind to get as im use to having pentium.

The 7900gt is roughly the equivalent of the 7800gtx in terms of pace.
A 200 gig HD doesn't cost very much to start with these days - Seagate, WD, Maxtor are all good in my opinion.
With your budget I would go for an Athlon 64 X2 or a dual core Opteron.

For $2000 I can quickly match you with the best bang for the buck off newegg.
If this is going to be an absolute gaming machine I would not go with a 200gig HD. For the best game rig setup go with 2 Raptors in raid 0 or just standalone having 2 raptors, one for all your online games and the other for all your PC games that are not online. Thats what I do and it works really well, raid doesn't give much more performance as some may think with 2 raptors so I just keep that simple and get 2 raptors stand alone.

Question, do you plan to overclock the system? If so you can save alot of $$$ and build the following system.

CPU cooling- Personal preference here again, heavy OCing on air with venice isn't a problem since Venice can OC really high with fewer volts then the cores before it. Venice 3200 939 @2.8 ghz on air with only 1.48v rock stable 24/7! Less volts less heat.

TOTAL= $1675 with 2 raptors and non SLI! Great deal huh, add in another $100 for S&H.

Now anything left out is whatever personal things you might add but that system above using the DFI board and a 3200 Venice core will OC like crazy, my brothers got the same system I built him a week ago except without the 7900gt, hes got it at 2.8ghz rock stable from 2.0 default speed. Like I said that system above is an awesome system for gaming if you OC, if not just exchange the CPU with a AMD 64 4000 San Diego core and leave it alone. That memory is also awesome, I been using it for over 1yr on my old system and on my brothers new comp, low low timing achieved with high OC, id have to get the actuall CPUZ info on the memory timings but I do know it was at 1t rate around 2.5 3 3 7 with the CPU 2.8ghz, id have to double check to get back to ya.

Anyway that system will do you alot of good and the newer 7900gt using the 90nm fab really is great to because less power consumption and heat and higher OC. Also that 7900gt is just as fast or just around same speeds as the 7800 GTX which cost almost $200 more! Anything else you need to know or on this build let me know, I wasn't sure if you wanted to OC or what and decided this is the best system high end for you, its not SLI because you wont need to with that new 7900gt because it performes so GODLY single GPU and going SLI on anything with these high end cards today is a waste of money because we can't tell on screen more then about 50 fps the human eye or so, and besides nothing really gets below like 68 fps with all the eye candy up on the heavy games of today on this new card.

Hehe so many of my friends use the mx518 but I prefer using the razer copperhead . I won't be needing any keyboards, monitors, speakers, and accessories like that just what comp itself. Trying to get the best I can with a budget of 2k so I can upgrade it even better later on.

Once that's covered you can think about adding an XFI or other bits and bobs. For gaming the graphics card is king, SLI'd 7900GTXs are as good as it gets (possibly beaten by 1900XTXs but i'm not a fan of crossfire). This is assuming you're overclocking.

Stay away from the 7800gtx, especially Leadtech, bad idea. Like I said and the new reviews 7900gt is the best bang for your money and performs on par with the 7800gtx so why go further? Who cares about 10-15 fps lower in some games when you can't even tell on screen, save the $200+ dollars and grab the 7900gt with the new 90nm fabrication process, less power consumption and heat.

No way you will need that 500 gigs of HD space, for what? Are you doing Video encoding riping videos or have tons of Digital photos? I don't see why you would waste such space and access times being slow to get your information, if its a game rig think smaller on the HD's. Its not like you need 30 games loaded onto the HD when we barely can even play 1 or 2 games that interest us the most now days. =) 2 raptors standalone like I said with 1 that has all your online games and the other for all the other PC games that are not online. They offer superior performance and very little increased performance in raid, so its not worth going raid but doing the setup I said. Western Digital offers the best CS and best warranty on their HD's and have better performance, Seagate never did and I seen to many complaints on failing Seagate drives.

Stay away from Asus 8AN motherboard, if you want to have problems then by all means grab it but if you want stable OC'ing and the best performance go with my DFI choice.

Your memory is ok, just ok, for $241 thats alot to pay for 1gig memory, most times 1gig memory for gaming is faster because the 512mb sticks x2 run faster then the 1gig sticks, also full load im not seeing all my system memory of 1gig being used up yet so untill then im sticking with 1gig to save money, 2gigs maybe in the future but not until speeds increase to the point were 1gig sticks run as fast as 1 512 stick. OCZ was my pick I gave you 1gig OCZ el platinum revision 2 memory, if you can and still want 2gigs grab that OCZ memory in 2gigs dual channel, not only does OCZ warranty the memory from high voltage and heat but its also the best fastest RMA memory service around. Not to mention its reputation as the standard for enthusiast memory.

Your CPU is extreme! Why do you want dual core on a game rig? Dual core on a game rig is just stupid. The difference you bring with your CPU choice and mine is that a 3200 venice OC'd correctly to around 2.8ghz is faster then that Opty even OC around 2.5, even though an opty can run with low low volts on higher OC the performance per $$$ is insane on a OC'd 3200 Venice single core. Also that Opty is $700!!! Grab a fricken FX57 new for $811!!!!! Best gaming CPU out besides going extra extreme with a FX60.

Ok then, great, go with a FX57 and the DFI board I chose you and the memory I chose and run a SLI 7900gt system or if going to wana save more money go 7600gt SLI system, no matter which way you go on those 2 SLI setups using 7900gt or 7600gt's you will have a very powerfull computer capable of going well into 3yrs of gaming.

Games do not progress like computer market technology, they do not tend to update the way they run every few months like computer technology so this is why you are safe for 3+yrs on this system, only thing that games might start to bring out in 1yr or longer from now is shader 3.0 as the norm and maybe some 64bit game applications which I still have a hard time believing if they did in 2yrs at least.

Since games do not progress that fast with the newest technology you are certainly safe, HELL!!!!!; we havn't even seen the first standardized open 64bit game yet have we and AMD 64 processors have been out for over what 4yrs or so now. And shader 3.0 is not even out yet on the newer games as a standard!!! The game makers take forever and basicly building a new system to use new technology every year is either a hobby like mine or just a way to keep your pockets empty and have fun on the new stuff but it doesn't improve the overall game experience or whatever that much since the last 1yr.

Its all going downhill now very slowly with all this new technology coming out, we are seeing a progressive decline for the need for all this high end ******, because APPS and GAMES still do not even use whats out, much of what we do is for fun or a hobby nowdays.

His system was for overall gaming, I was enlightening him on the raptor since he has chosen to say he has alot of videos that he does on his PC at the end of this thread and notice how sarcastic I was being when I said it, nothing like geting new information to a question then geting responses to what we thought we knew.

I given my picks and dealt nicely as best I could to his system, my last post I wasn't going to further get into what he can use for video, so I just said screw it use the raptor for speed!

Show me where I said games today do not use what is out? And if you read again I was refering to game technology advancement, so reading that you would have gotten that out of it. I was talking about how games are not running fully with the newest of technology today, nothing is standardized yet and where are we seeing shader 3.0 games big time? Where are 64bit applications and games? You sir like to argue I can already tell but I on the other hand do not go around hijacking threads to prove my ignorance that I cant read a thread before posting BS, which I do not since I read threads before posting.

I suggested an FX57 because he wanted to do that opty for $700 to play games which id dual core, if you play games you do not go dual core you wana spend close to $800 then get a FX57 or go higher on a FX60.

Show me where I said games today do not use what is out? And if you read again I was refering to game technology advancement, so reading that you would have gotten that out of it. I was talking about how games are not running fully with the newest of technology today, nothing is standardized yet and where are we seeing shader 3.0 games big time? Where are 64bit applications and games? I suggested an FX57 because he wanted to do that opty for $700 to play games which id dual core, if you play games you do not go dual core you wana spend close to $800 then get a FX57 or go higher on a FX60.

Its all going downhill now very slowly with all this new technology coming out, we are seeing a progressive decline for the need for all this high end ******, because APPS and GAMES still do not even use whats out, much of what we do is for fun or a hobby nowdays.

also if you knew anything about games you would know that dc are going to be used sooner than you think as most of the gpu makers have drivers that utilize both cores.

Can't really consider him a bully when he can't even properly argue with anyone with an IQ over 10.
