Building a Laptop

Hey guys, I don't really know anything about building laptops. I have built a desktop, but I was wondering if it is any more difficult or tricky to build a laptop. Is it basically the same idea? Case...motherboard...everything else...? soo, yeah, some tips would be helpful. thanks

from what i've seen, you don't buy the motherboard, gpu and case seperately. you get a barebones laptop and you can add the ram, cpu, hdd as you like. i know asus has some.

Look around Tomshardware.com, they did a guide on building a notebook.

Building a notebook is only economical for higher-powered or specially configured laptops. If you require a high-powered video card or some other unusual spec (mutliple hard drives in a RAID configuration, for example), building is the way to go.

However, for more "standard" configurations it might make more sense to buy a used barebones off of eBay. Many laptops share many parts, so you may be able to get a T41 with a blown out motherboard, and replace it with the motherboard of a T42.

I copied and pasted from my original post. This will be my first laptop build after building many desktops than I care to remember (ex-Computer Repair Tech). I'm assuming Murphy's Law considering this is my first time... at least I wont use poor quality parts like a PC CHIPS motherboard like I did back in the day <grin> For all I know they may have improved their quality.

I will pop out the Celeron and install a Core 2 Duo next year when the price goes below $150. My brother just wants to play older 3D games like Age of Mythology and WarCraft 3. He'll play more demanding games like World of Warcraft or Empire at War when I install the Core 2 Duo in 12-18 months.

For $1250, you can get a GL30 with a C2D at 2ghz, 1GB of RAM, and an 80gb hard drive - and a nice, long warranty to go with it. (Trust me, a good warranty is worth its weight in gold - I've owned enough laptops and repaired enough broken laptops to tell you that having the repairs done for free is worth it.)
