Well, I'm gonna build a MacTel in February, like the title suggests, but I need your help with getting a list together, as I'm not all that good in Intel kinds of things. What I need (what I already have marked in CAPS):
Intel SSE2 Processor
Intel SSE2 Processor compatible motherboard (AGP or intergrated video)
HARD DRIVE (40 GB for now, wait until summer, and then it'll get the 200 GB drive I'm on now )
DVD-ROM DRIVE
AGP videocard (must not cost more than $50) (<-- if the mobo of your choice is non-integrated video)
CASE AND POWERSUPPLY
Cooler that will fit Intel SSE2 Processor compatible motherboard
DDR(2) memory

All in all, I'm looking to spend no more than $250, ex shipping.
Help?

For best performance you'll want a SSE3 CPU with NX/XD support such as the newer J, and EMT 64 models of the Prescott, and Celeron.

Core Image, and Quartz extreme works well on the 915G based mobos since that's what the developers used.

You can probably Google for (HCL) Hardware Compatibly Lists of various components that work with OS X X86.

I'm using my MacTel P4C800-E Deluxe currently.

I was thinking of getting a Celeron D, but I'm not too sure... Really, you guys tell me, I'm more of an AMD kind of guy, but I can't get my OSx86 to work on an AMD testbed ..

Maybe you can give the Celeron M a try, with one of those Asus adaptors, seems like a very cheap chip with good OC potential, runs much cooler than those Prescott Celerons.

915G based mobo with built in graphics is the way to go. as is prescott based chips so you have sse3 support. celeron D should do the job.
I got it working well on an old compaq.

You can only use the 915G IGP if you want any form of acceleration, I think.

The new Athlons/Semprons have SSE3 support, so you should have no trouble installing OS X on any one of them.

By the way, SSE2/3 are CPU instruction sets. The motherboard makes no difference.

Yeah, I know, I just meant a compatible mobo, I know SSE(2/3) are instruction sets, but I heard that some mobo's that support SSE2, don't support SSE3. I just need some names, people .

Will OSX x86 not run on an AMD platform then, i would have thought you could (I haven?t researched this yet). Or is there a reason that you prefer to use Intel rather than AMD in this scenario.

Well, people all around me are asking me if the new Mac's that are coming (Presslers and stuff) are any good. That means that I have to know what I'm talking about, and that I need to be able to work with OSX if I want to stay the person that fixes their computers.
So basically, yeah, forced to go Intel.
EDIT: Not that it's a bad thing, mind you .

Ahh right i was going to say, because an x86 version of OSX would indicate that it would work on all x86 processors aka Intel and AMD. I thought it was something I missed and somehow this OS was not going to work on an AMD platform, a bit silly me thinking this really.

The reason for my interest is so that if apple ever release an OEM version of their new OSX x86, I would be very inclined to purchase it (I like the GUI), basically I like the software but not the hardware.

one of these should do the job with a CPU. for get about AGP cards no drivers= no acceleration = big bumer on an OS that has an open GL rendered desktop.

So.. What kind of card should I get, then?

pretty sure that video card (onboard will be supported by it, later maybe there will be some hacks or drivers that allow PCIe cards.
Youo can get it to work on AMD systems. but right now that intel setup is bust to have drivers for video sound and networking.

Yeah, exactly. But, I was kinda hoping people would try and make me a to-get list ..
