What's the best sound card to throw in there if all I want is for the TV to play sound out of it's own speakers?

What I want: I throw a DVD into the PC and it plays on the TV...and sound comes from the TV.

What plugs/wires/etc would I need?

The latest from Creative Audigy soundware... I think their latest is the X-Fi series that uses madcore awesome power to distribute richochet-inducing sound waves throughout your home. But yah, Creative is the soundcard company you may want to look at for top notch audio hardware. I've used Turtle Beach, AOpen, Chaintech, and Hercules but none come close to sound quality from Creative cards. Don't misunderstand, all those companies I listed above gave me decent sound, but 75% of the time my sound wasn't crisp as I'd like it to be.

As for those plugs/wires/etc you would need, I would think the soundcard comes with it??

If you're going to be playing sound from the TV...onboard sound. If you're going to be throwing it into a receiver, get a card from Turtle Beach Montego 7.1 or Bluegears HDA X-Mystique 7.1 as they both do Dolby Digital Live. If you're into games, get the Creative X-Fi.

For TV speakers, stick with integrated, or a really cheap soundcard (Chaintech AV-710?)

You just need to get an adapter and then run RCA cables to the tv.

I would definately have to agree with yoyoyohowsdajello here
1. because hes the "soundman" and two because I have an HTPC and I have it running on the chaintech sound card as well, its a good card because it will output data to the spdif (digital optical) channel if its been encoded with Dolby Digital, so DVDs, HD movies, so it makes a good upgrade solution for about $30.

Huh? Why even an offer of a Dolby Digial Live card? The TV has stereo speakers. Besides, you are talking about composite RCA cables, so there's no way it could carry anymore than stereo anyway.

I guess the XiFi COULD work, if you were really trying to improve the output of the TV by expanding transients. But who in their mind would pay that much for a sound card without actually using external speakers? You can't assume until he says so : P

If its for TV speakers, use anything cheap. ANYTHING cheap. Your TV speakers can only benefit so much from electronics before pure physics kicks in.
