Okay, thank for your suggestions.
-Will the ASUS A8N32-SLI Deluxe or DFI Lanparty NF4 mobo support the Opteron 165? I looked at the "CPU type" sections on the spec and it says Athlon 64 FX/Athlon 64/Sempron.
I don't think A8N32 justifies the price difference even if it has dual 16x lanes. Plus unless you are getting 2 cards at once, I would not go with SLI. Either will support an opteron processor. Opteron = FX = A64 (all same chip). Just FX has unlocked multipliers up and down and Opteron gets stress tested more since it is for server use. Before Opteron was for socket 940 that is why no one talked about it. Now once they switched to socket 939, it obviously overclocks better since it is cherry picked. But if you do not plan to overclock, do not get an opteron since each comes with a 200mhz disadvantage at equal price levels with A64/X2 processors.
-How about the SUS EN7800GT DUAL/2DHTV/512M Dual Geforce 7800GT 512MB? Its a little pricey but with dual GPUs.
My suggestion is X1800XT at monarch I think they have a MIR, 2x7800GTs if you must buy today. If you can wait 2 more weeks, R580.
-I wanted two burners so I could directly burn media from one source to another. The plextor I was looking at was $120 and is on SATA /w 8M cache. Are Plextor drives unreliable or did you jsut suggest NEC becasue its cheeper?
You know that you just need 1 DVD burner and 1 DVD drive. You do not need 2 burners. A regular DVD drive is only $25.
-Im daft about PSU's so i just picked one with the power I thought I would need. Can you suggest a modular PSU that works with SLI and SATA drive? I really dont like the look fo teh cable trunk, especially in cases with windows.
Cons: Generally ANY modular PSU - espeically if you use a motherboard that supports dual-core processing or SLI, or basically a high-power-consumption setup. Modular PSUs (where you just plug in cables to the main unit as you need them) greatly reduce the amperage to the PC. But if you insist, here is a massive PSU roundup:
26 PSU roundup Antec Neo series does pretty well.
-How much memory is enought for this system? Mobo supports 8 Gigs so... would 1 Gig be sufficient?
I'd say 1 gig is enough for most people. But really you would have to buy 2x512 sticks and that is not optimal since later it'll be 4x512 and 2T latency with A64. So I'd invest in 1 stick of ram 1 gig if you can't afford 2 at the same time. Then get another 1. But 2 gigs is what I would get today.
-I was looking around google for info about the raptors but im still confused about the actualy uses of them. I assume they are used to install windows and program that need to read / write from HDD a lot. Would game benefit from these HDDs?
I think of the price, the Raptor is not worth it just yet. Maybe when it gets to $200 or so.
150 gig raptor vs. 74 gig raptor vs. WD400 SE16
So getting
250 gig or 400 gig WD 16mb SATA drives Much cheaper. Sure they are slower, but you can get 250 gig and it'll be still faster than 90% of all SATA drives. If you need more space, the 400 gig version is nice (or 250x 2 since I like to keep OS on 1 drive with music and stuff and games and everything else on the other. I want the main OS drive to be fast and so I can reformat it at any time and not care. With 400 gig drive you pay > than 2x250 and you gotta partition.)
