Happy Holidays Everyone. I"m cosidering building a new computer. It will be used for Gaming and Photograpy mainly. Looking for ideas of which way to go. I now have a P4 3.2, Asus P4C800-E Deluxe board,1 gig of Ocz 3700 rev 3 memory and a Ati,9800XT. I have always been a Intel guy but it may be time to change. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!!

Not a issue. Don't want to go hog wild but money is really not a problem. Just want to build a good machine.

I pieced together a pretty hefty machine for just a little over 1000 on newegg the other day

AMD 64 3200+
ABIT NF4 SLI MOBO (the 139.99 one) (socket 939)
1024 Kingston HyperX PC-3200
80 GB Western Digital SATA 7200RPM
2 x eVga 7800 GT
Sony DVD burner

Only thing you might need to buy is a case and a power supply.

AMD X2 3800 / Thermalright SI-120 / Antec TriCool 120mm Fan
EPoX 9NPA+ Ultra SLI
2x1GB OCZ 2-3-5-3 PC3200
2xSamsung 200GB SATAII NCQ HDD
1x 7800GT (whichever's cheaper) / Zalman VF700Cu

Expect to get 2.4+ out of the chip.

If you need a case and PSU, go for Antec P180 / Antec TruePower 2.0 500W.

If the comp is just for gaming and photos then ditch the X2 and got with the opty 146 for less then half the price and OC it

i would build around those deals

for ram i would just find a deal on 2GB's of value ram like Corsair or Geil or OSZ
could swing it for $170 or cheaper might want to look at Chiefvalue referbished at the worst its $4.00 to ship it back to get new ram. could save a bit here and still have the nice warranty in your name.

Socket M2 (AM2?), Windows Vista, and DirectX 10 are right around the corner. I'd advise you to wait until DDR2 boards come out. More CPU potential and faster RAM.

If you simply can't wait, and since money isn't an issue:

CPU: Opteron 180
RAM: Corsair XMS 3500LLPRO
MOBO: Asus A8N32-SLI (True SLI!)
VIDEOCARD: Dual Sapphire X1800XT or Leadtek 7800GTX Extreme (The 512's are nowhere to be seen, Leadtek 7800GTX > EVGA KO)
CASE: Your choice.
PSU: Your choice, although people will recommend Seasonic, OCZ, PCP&C, Antec, and Fortron.
CD/DVD: Your choice.
HD: WD Raptors? WD Caviar SE 400GB is not bad either... your choice =)

What is sad is that a 2/1 year old system (like yours) would probably not be much slower than any of these systems people are recommending here.. Either upgrade the video card or wait for M2...

I had considered going to a X850X Platinum and going to 2 gig of OCZ PC 3200 Titanium Ram and just keep what I have for now.

well, windows vista isnt due out till next fall, and im sure it wont come out on schedule, and AM2 wont be that big of a change, performance wise. unless you want quad core, or a cpu that is over 3ghz.

well if you are really into photoshop and gaming, I would suggest
Main Build

AMD Opteron 165 1GHz FSB Socket 939 Dual Core Processor - Retail-$359.00Opteron 165(x2 3800+ with 2x chache, same price)

Patriot Signature 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM System Memory - Retail-$152.99 after $20.00 Mail-In Rebate

a lot of hdd space. 300 gigs is not nearly enough for me gaing. I'm ure photos in raw format will take up a lot also. I'd suggest a couple of at least 250gb drives in jbod(seperate by itself no raid.)
2x Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 3.5" Serial ATA150 Hard Drive - OEM-$121.00 after $10.00 Mail-In Rebate X2
Wires too since it's a oem drive
2x COOLMAX 24" 2-Head SATA (SERIAL ATA 150) Neon Wire EL Round Cable - OEM -$3.49 x2

Sli motherboard
ASUS A8N-SLI ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail- $122 no where near the cheapest, not the best ocer, but since you're new to amd, asus support and documentation is truly excellent. reliability is also top notch. I've had asus motherboards from 12,13 years ago that still work fine even though those 486 boxes are no longer really in any use besides emulating Super Nintendo games.

2x eVGA Geforce 7800GT 256-P2-N516 Video Card - Retail- $299 x2 2 free copies of quake 4. one for you, 1 to profit by.

Antec PERFORMANCE TX TX1050B Black Computer Case - Retail- $125. a little boring stylisically, but functionally flawless, great power supply and silent to boot.

NEC Black IDE DVD Burner Model ND-3550A - Retail-$47 great optical drive.

Optional

Sound Card, onboard is fine unless you are going to get really good speakers.
For Value
If you're going to go all out
For Music

Speakers/headset
Speaker heaven(for surround anyway)
Great Headset

Mouse/Keyboard
Really preference, personalyl i prefer microsoft keyboard mice ergonmics, but some swear by logitech.

Monitor
24" Sony Trinitron GDM-FW900 CRT. Best monitor ever
or
If yuo dont think your desk will hold 200 pounds...21" Sony Trinitron FD Perfect Flat CRT
or if you must have the smaller space of a lcd, and are willing to sacrifice visual quality...
2005 fpw. affordable and big
or
2405fpw not so affordable but bigger

I want to thank you all for you responses. I think with the new Video card and extra ram it will be fine for a couple of years. I will probably add some hard drive space also. Happy Holidays to everyone!! Thanks again !!!!!
