OK well this is my first PC build and I want it to be one that will last me a couple years. I want Athlon 64 with PCIe but not sure on which board to get. SLI is too expensive so I need a single card solution. Well anyway heres what I've picket out:

Athlon 64 3000+

Gigabyte 6600GT (PCIe)

PQI Turbo series 2x256 MB

Seagate 80 gb barracuda

OCZ Modstream 450W

Parts I'm not sure about:

ASUS A8V-E Deluxe VIA K8T890... What Athlon 64 PCIe mobo would you suggest if not that one. The reason I'm not sure is because I haven't heard anything about this mobo.

Thanks for the help in advance.

The A8N is only about 190 elsewhere. (Newegg isnt always the cheapest).

Well, If I was builiding a system to last right now, I would also buy a SLI motherboard, if only because it is the highest Nforce 4 they have. The extra bucks spent may end up being quite useful later on. But it depends on your budget.

PQI Turbo series 2x256 MB ************ALARM BELLS**************** GO EITHER 1 X 512 OR 2 X 512 and go for VALUE RAM. The so called "Fast RAM" is not worth it.

Seagate 80 gb barracuda (Depending on how much you are paying for this you can get 120 for about the same price nowadays)

OCZ Modstream 450W (down grade this to $80.00 and upgrade your RAM to 1 GIG)

Parts I'm not sure about:

ASUS A8V-E Deluxe VIA K8T890... What Athlon 64 PCIe mobo would you suggest if not that one. The reason I'm not sure is because I haven't heard anything about this mobo.

Conclusion: Dump the 2X256 "Fast RAM" and the expensive PSU and get 1 GIG Value RAM
for $140.00 and upgrade your HD to at least 120 GB

Ok, heres an idea. Consider buy somethings used (memory, graphics card, hardrive). You will then have the money to buy an SLI board, and you will have a system that will last I daresay 10 years or more. With that in mind, you'll have plenty of room to upgrade, everything from your one graphics card to adding another, to adding more memory to upgrading to dual core. Just a thought.

I would try the FS/FT forums and/or Ebay. If you are not comfortable with buying thats understandable, but for me a more solid foundation is more important (aka best mobo you can get right now) SLI is hyped right now, yes, but it will atleast increase longevity even if there is nothing futureproof.

SLI last 10 year? You must be smoking some pretty strong stuff to come up with a bold prediction like that. If SLI lasts more than a year that will be an achievement.

Chosonman, what the hell is your problem? I'm recommending a board that i have used in another system because he said he wasn't too sure about the board that he has listed there. I know he should get more RAM than that, but someone else already said so, so i'm not about to repeat myself. And if the board can be purchased for less elswhere, then fair enough. It's his responbility to look around and see where he can get it the cheapest.

So YOU get a clue before YOU post.

SLI is a waste of money to anyone who is on a budget. Can you argue with that?
And it is ignorant to say or imply that SLI is faster or better when it isn't.
SLI is fast at graphics rendering at only the HIGHEST resolutions and you would need a monitor with at least 1600x1200 resolution and 2 6800GT graphics cards to truely appreciate it.
Besides that SLI is not faster than other systems.

The Chaintech nForce4 Ultra is cheaper and better then the Asus mobo.

The ram is pretty crap but it's cheap so what the hell (make sure you get either 2x256 or 2x512 or you ain't gonna be getting dual channel goodness)

Everything else is fine but if you can spring for 120GB hard drive like this, do so.

you dont have to make them glow if you dont want to. Sides who cares if it performs awesome? and it really does perform awesome. I suggest this mobo over a Asus

Did i say that the SLI feature is what made it fast? Nooooo.... stop jumping to conclusion will ya. As i said, i used that motherboard in a system and i found that it was the fastest system that i have ever built. You can argue with that for as long as you want.

But just to keep you satisfied, i'll agree with the motherboard of choice here, just because it's NON-SLI.

Jeez, some people just like to make a mountain out of a mole hill

And yes Zapp Brannigan, that Chaintech motherboard is pretty good too.

Another good board is also the MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum: http://www.newegg.com/app/View...tion=13-130-484&depa=1

I second the recommendation of the Chaintech VNF4 Ultra

It'll do what you need it to do. It's not the greatest, but it's great in terms of performance/$$.

Haven't heard much about the DFI nF4 Solution, but the past two years or so, DFI has produced very high quality boards. For $20 more, I'd probably opt for the DFI over the Chaintech.

truth.

and please no sli with 6600gt.

by the time you might get around to using 2 different video cards in sli in that board, there will be better technologies available for cheaper.

make sure you get 1 gb of ram

the ocz powersupply is a little bit overdone for your build. i would just got for a 350-400W antec or enermax.

upgrade the hd if you have any money left over.

another vote for vnf4
