Yeah, that's pretty much what I expected, I just wanted to double check to make sure you didn't do anything crazy.
As for snapshots, no I don't do anything fancy with them at home. The zfs send command sends its output do stdout, so it can be written to any file, including a mount from another NAS (e.g. your old Netgear). We have a whole custom set of scripts that manage snapshot backups and retention policies at work (all Solaris), so I have never done this via the FreeNAS GUI. I don't know if the GUI makes it easy/hard/impossible.
