Building Computer trouble!

OK I have built a few Computers before. And I am buliding a PC for a mate.
Anyway, I did what a usually do, connect mobo, HD and so on.

Anyway I can boot up into the BIOS, but my FDD will just sit there with it's LED on, and when I put in a Floopy disk to install the OS, it will not even read the disk (have tried many disks,). I have the floppy cable in the mobo and the FDD properly, and the power lead in the FDD properly. The BIOS can see there is a FDD drive there, but it does not seem to read any disks. What could be wrong?

Also it takes a while on bootup to detect the RAM, and the HDD. My HDD is sharing an IDE cable with a CD-ROM, but the HDD is the Master.

The Mobo is a Gigabyte GA-6VXE7+, and I have been using it in my PC for around a year, but have just upgraded.

Thx for any help!!!

Cheers

Same thing happened to me. My floppy just sat there with the light on and wouldn't read anything. This was with a computer that had an OS already installed so I got to try a lot of disks.

I ended up getting a new floppy drive, which worked fine. Don't know what advice to give you except try another FDD if you have one laying around. If it works, you know you have a dead drive.

When the floppy light is on continously this is a sure sign that you have the connector backwards. Flip one end or the other. Remembert that the pin 1 close to the power connector applies only to HDs NOT floppies!

You mean the Floopy IDE cable, not the floppy PS cable?

Yep, he's talking about the IDE or interface cable. Make sure that you connect the drive that you want to be A: after the twist to the drive - the other end connects to the mobo.

Yeah I had the same problem and my floppy was just connected backwards
here was the tricky part
It was a dummy proof cable (there is a little notch in it so it can only be inserted one way) and these are
supposed to ensure that anybody who connects these will have the pins properly aligned
my prob was the notch was on the wrong side thus forcing me to connect it improperly
solution was to either cut off the notch or just use an ide cable without the notch

Well guys I have no idea now. I have tried connecting both sides of the FDD cable into each connection port, but still I get the bloody LED on all the time.
The FDD cable looks fine to me, and I use to use it myself.

I had the same problem once - not all floppies are created equal did you try both ends? just switch it around at the drive end pin one can be either left, or right. You might just have a bad floppy drive too.

Try using your floppy drive from your computer. If it works, then just get a new floppy drive. They only cost $10
