Building computer, Trying to decide between p4 3.0, athlon 64 3200, and athlon xp 3200

I'm building a new computer that will last me for a while. I will mainly be doing school work on it, while watching movies occasionally, as well as gaming at times. I'm trying to decide between the p4 3.0, athlon 64 3200 (s754 or 959), or an athlon xp 3200.

any advice?

Get the Athlon 64. If you plan to upgrade the CPU sometime later, get the 939. Otherwise, get the 754, as it is usually a bit faster.

athlon 64 2800 or 3000 socket 754 with nvidea n force 3 chipset DFI and chaintech make excellent system combinations for around 200 bucks it's hard to beat save your money by not buying pentium 4 system and invest it into a better video card

If for some reason you decide against the A64, for the love of all that's holy don't get the Athlon XP. They're so much slower at this point in many applications that it's not even funny. (I should know. I've got one.)

A64. I also second the socket 754 nomination (unless you decide on PCI-E). Who cares if it isn't as future proof as socket 939? By the time you upgrade again, may as well get a new mobo for future technology support.

I agree with the others, go with the A64..it will perform better than the P4, and the Athlon XP is way too out of date to consider.

You've heard it all, so I'll back it up for you and postcount++ for me. It's a win-win situation.

Hell, go with the A64 2800 if it's significantly cheaper. I'd also go S754 if you don't plan to upgrade things for quite a while (PCIe is still a possibility, too--NF4 can be ported to S754, and ECS--FWIW--has done it already) or don't need a 90nm Winchester to fool around with for overclocking.

I'll disagree. Go for Socket 939 and PCI Express. That way you'll have the option, 3-4 years from now, to upgrade to a dual core and new graphics card at minimal expense. It might costs a little bit more now, but it'll make your system beautiful even a few years from now.

(Another computer of mine recently went from an AthlonXP 1600+ to an Athlon XP Mobile 3000+. Same FSB, blazing fast compared to the old CPU. And for just $100. Upgrade potential matters!)

Thanks guys, I'm pretty sure I've decided to go with athlon 64 now. As you can see, i'm a noob when it comes to computer stuff. and I don't plan on upgrading anytime soon after I build it. So yall think a S754 would be a better way to go since it's a bit faster? and I'm pretty sure I won't be upgrading for a while.

I'm slowly trying to find time to research my build when I have time, so any suggestions on the other pc components are welcome.

A 2800+ A64 sckt 754 is 1.8ghzghz and a 3000+ A64 sckt 939 is 1.8ghz...In most non memory intensive apps but cpu dependent they will be identical....However sckt 939 is dual channel and thus in memory intensive apps the dual channel can make up to 1-3% difference and thus would be faster but still not quite equal to a 3000+ sckt 754....

I would say get sckt 939 now (the cheapest 3000+ to 3200+)...wait while and get a dual core cpu come later with a simple cpu upgrade...

reasons sckt 939 vs sckt 754

1) dual channel memory controller
2) upgradeability shortly to dual core or more faster single cpu cores
3) venice core is arriving in weeks with added SSE3 that the sckt 754 does not have
4) sckt 939 (winchester chips) are 90nm process...they takes less vcore and thus run cooler

Heheh, as much as I like the XP (I'm using one myself), if I was building a new system, I'd get the A64. Socket doesnt matter, bacause 3-4 years from now I bet AMD will make the A64 run at higher FSB/HTT, or something else that would make you buy a new motherboard anyways. A64 are just faster because of the onboard memory controller.

BTW, as far as pure number crunching goes, an XP at 2.5 ghz is about as fast as a A64 at 2 ghz. Thats what I can tell from my own experience.
