Hello, I am very familiar with computer parts and have done plenty of research. The reason I am creating this thread is to ask a few questions because this will be the first computer that I am going to build. I am looking to use the computer mainly for the media center capabilities (including HDTV), converting video files, and in general multi tasking. I also want to make sure the computer will run a couple games (World of Warcraft, Halo 2, Gears of War) at high end settings although gaming will not be the main purpose of the computer as long as they play smooth. My budget is around $1,250 including everything minus the monitor. I am not looking to over clock because I do not have that much knowledge in that area but would like to keep my options open to over clock in the future. I believe I have listed everything that I possibly need except for minor things such as a keyboard or mouse. If there are any major things please let me know. Thanks
Here are a couple questions I have. (more prob. to come)

-What would be better: high end dual core or quad core? (Prefer AMD over Intel)

The basic parts I am planning are buying are the following:
Processor
AMD Phenom 9500 Agena 2.2GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 2MB L3 Cache Socket AM2+ 95W Quad-Core Processor
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16819103226
OR
AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+ Windsor 3.2GHz 2 x 1MB L2 Cache Socket AM2 125W Dual-Core Processor
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16819103191

Motherboard + cpu?
I am having trouble finding a good motherboard (Dont know much about bus speed and so on)

Memory?
I am looking to get 8GB of ram and do not quite understand what timings mean.

Hard Drive
Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 ST31000340AS 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16827248011

Video Card (have read this is the best card the $)
EVGA 512-P3-N801-AR GeForce 8800GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Retail
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16814130318

Case (looking for good cooling)
NZXT Zero Black/Silver Aluminum ATX Full Tower Computer Case
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16811146029
OR
LIAN LI PC-60BPLUSII W Black Aluminum ATX Mid Tower Computer Case
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16811112116

TV Tuner
MDP-100
Will this HDTV Tuner be able to do basic cable and will it work in Windows Vista Media Center.

I am willing to change anything if it will be cheaper with little to no difference in quality or performance.

For converting video files, you want an Intel chip at the highest GHz and with the most cores. Motherboard-wise a low-mid range P35 chipset with the features you want would suffice. More expensive doesn't mean better or faster, but it does mean more features. Do you need eSATA, Firewire, etc?

For media center capabilities, have you considered a media center style case? For gaming your video card choice is good. I think 8GB RAM is total overkill as neither gaming nor converting video files would benefit much AFAIK.

Can I ask why Intel. Is there that big of a difference between Intel and AMD. Would 4GB of ram be better for what I am using my PC for. I have been reading that over clocking is really easy if you know what you are doing and research a llitle bit. What would be the best processor and motherboard to over clock with. Also I read that memory has to do with over clocking as well what type of memory should I get if I wanted 4GB

1: Intel are, simply put, better clock-for-clock than AMD right now. They're leading the performance end of the market and have been for a little while now.
2: Yes. 4GB is so terribly cheap it's a crime not to get it.
3: Overclocking the new Intel processors is sooooo easy. I mean really easy. The E8400 and a P35 based board will do you well.
4: Just get any kind of cheap DDR2-800 and you're fine.

2x2GB is better because then you've got more room to add RAM in the future. Denser modules are usually newer chips too. Timings you don't need to worry about unless you're overclocking it in some extreme fashion and then trying to eke every last drop of juice out of it. 5-5-5-15 is pretty normal.

Still need a HDD, case, HDTV Tuner, monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers.

Questions:
1.Is what I already have picked out so far a good setup for over clocking? media capabilities? gaming?
2.What would be a recommended case for excellent cooling?
3.what would be the best monitor 22" I could get for no more than $300
4.What are some of the best recommended speakers? 7.1 surround? also audio card?
5.Is 32MB cache a big difference for a hard drive?
6.What would be a good HDTV and basic cable tuner for windows media center

1: It's a pretty good list so far, actually.
2: Not sure, but loads of people are using the Antec P180.
3: $300 will get you this Dell 22" TFT http://accessories.us.dell.com...dhs&cs=19&sku=320-5205
4: Try reading the AV subforum for speakers recommendations. The onboard sound on that motherboard is of great quality and should be enough for you.
5: It's not a big difference but bigger is better, with regards to cache.
6: AV subforum again might help here.

For the case, are you looking for something that will blend in with a media center, or something that looks more like a conventional computer tower?

As an example of a "media PC" case, here's the Antec NSK2480:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...6811129034&Tpk=NSK2480

Now, that Antec isn't going to work for your build unless you change the motherboard, because this case only takes MicroATX motherboards. I'm not suggesting that you change your motherboard either. I'm just showing you an example of a media case.

Newegg has a whole section devoted to such cases here:
http://www.newegg.com/Store/Su...TPC-Media-Center-Cases

Don't forget to get a good cooler if you plan on over-clocking.

If you're on a budget, the Rosewill S775 cooler in hot deals is good, or the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro.

If you want to spend a few dollars and get something nice, a Sunbeam Tuniq Tower 120 or a Thermaltake Ultra 120 is good.

QUESTIONS LEFT TO BE ANSWERED:
-Is there anything wrong with this setup?

-What would be a good PSU for this setup?

-I am wanting to overclock now after researching therefor went with http://www.xpcgear.com/q6600.html
for the CPU because it gaurantees G0 which I read is eaiser to OC?

-Is there anything missing that will be needed?

-I have researched quite abit and can not decide what TV tuner I should get. I am wanting one with QAM and HDTV.

Thanks and you all have been so helpful.

excellent list! now the perfect PSU would be a PCPower & Cooling PSU but any Corsair PSU will do! 400 watts & up.
doesn't look like you're missing anything except speakers? u did mention 7.1 which u don't really need. get 2.1 or 5.1 if u don't mind running wires behind u.

Are you going to overclock for sure now ? Because if you still feel a little iffy about it, you might be better of with the cheaper e8400, dualcore 3.0ghz cpu. You could also save a little on the heatsink, first of all, the tuniq tower 120 is 45$ at newegg.com but if you don't plan on intensive overclocking, an arctic freezer 7 pro for half the money will be just fine as well. http://www.newegg.com/Product/...k=arctic%2bfreezer%2b7

Setup looks good, I'd prolly go with this HD http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16822152052 because it's a little cheaper, and cooler/quiter running.

I am planning on overclocking for sure. With my current setup would overclocking the Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 3.2 GHz be stable? I also read about overclocking the GeForce 8800GT? How hard is that to do and what would be the true benefits? I beleive I am going to go with this power supply as it was recommened for the case i am using in a review I read http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16817103941 or http://www.newegg.com/Product/...oOnlyMark=False&Page=2 as i read it is much more reliable and the extra $70 is not that big of a problem. Which one would be the better choice. I read that the PCP&C is a little on the big side so I am not sure it would fit in my case but seems like the better buy? I also would like to keep the hard drive I am going with because I heard to many stories about OEM hard drives not working, failing, wrong firmware and so on.

I think the corsair 550vx is a better quality unit then the neopower 550w, although the neopower is modular. Rather get the 520hx instead, also modular. The PC&P is PURE overkill, and not worth it for you. As for overclocking, yes a q6600 should be stable enough with your setup. As for overclocking the videocard, meh, I don't overclock mine, performance gain isn't that big if you ask me, although I have seen people end up with dead videocards. Whereas I've BARELY seen people end up with dead CPU's, so overclocking CPU's yes, overclocking videocards, no. It's doable though, but I don't know what the real performance gain will be, and 8800gt's do run rather hot on stock cooling.

Ok, I decided to go with the 520hx instead. Read some reviews and they all looked pretty nice. I did read however that with my current case some people have said the cables are not long enough to route behind the motherboard? I would like to do that to increase airflow. Is there a way to extend the cables or will I have to route ontop?

Looks very good from my limited knowledge. I'm looking to buy a very similar machine. I'm also planning to buy the Antec P182 case, or possibly its little brother, the Antec Lifestyle Solo (identical to the P150, except the Solo comes without a crappy Antec power supply).

For a good and quiet power supply, get a Seasonic S12. I'm going for the S12II 330, but I'm getting an E8400 instead of a Q6600 and a Radeon 3850 instead of a 8800GT, so I'm not sure your setup is quite a energy friendly as mine. 330 Watt should be plenty for most machines, but if you feel uncomfortable with it, take a slightly larger Seasonic or the excellent Corsair CMPSU-450VX.

As for dual core versus quad core, I'm personally very skeptical about the advantages of quad cores. You only really benefit from them if the load from all your threads can be divided equally over all four cores. If one thread does 60% of the work, a quad core offers no advantage over a much cheaper dual core. Add to that the fact that the E8200 and E8400 are cheap, fast and have very low power consumption, and my choice is obvious. But your taste and computer usage my differ.

The cables on the Corsair 520HX are long enough to route behind the motherboard in the P182 case, if you mount the PSU with the fan face down. If you mount the PSU with the fan face up (I prefer this orientation), then the 4 pin auxilary cable will not be long enough to route behind the motherboard, but the rest of the cables is still long enough. You can buy the 4 pin auxilary cable extension here

Intel quad core CPU's offer better performance then AMD's offerings, but not any of their other processors. A quad core would be over kill for a media center PC. Any currnt generation single core would be more than up to the task. However, The Athlon x2's are cheap, outperform intel dual cores, and use quite a bit less power to boot. I'd be looking at one of those. Nothing against Intel, I've used there processors for years, but the price / performace ratio, and green factor favors AMD.

Umm... since when? Are we talking about Core 2 based? Because since Intel dropped the P4 Netburst architecture, the Core 2 has been fantastic in terms of performance, and current Intel dual-core CPUs perform better than AMD CPUs, clock-for-clock, not to mention that they can be overclocked way higher.

Sorry about all caps I had this typed up in a word document for my own purposes and did not feel like retyping it. This is what I am really planning on sticking with. There is one thing I am not so sure about though. After reading up on the monitor I found out it is not digital. Is that super important or will it not be noticiable? Also Is it possible to change the stock fans on my case to maybe quiter/better airflow? I am really wanting to keep the system cool as possible. My current computer is a Acer Aspire ASE380-UD422A and is somewhat noisy so I can handle the noise for the most part if any on my build, as long as it isnt as loud as the Xbox 360 DVD drive (sounds like a jet plane) lol. Thanks and you all have been very helpful.

1. The Antec P182 case can be had at Newegg for $60 after instant promo code, rebate and free shipping. Check the Hot Deals forum for details.
2. The Corsair 520W PSU costs $90 at Buy.com

3. If you want quiet, you'd want to replace those tricool fans that came with the P182 with the Scythe Slipstream fans. The Slipstream fans are relatively cheap, very quiet and you can buy them at different speeds. I think the best, in terms of noise/airflow, are the 800 and 1200 RPM models.

4. I'd get the HP w2207 or the newer w2207H 22" LCD monitor and be done with it. It has outstanding color and picture, rotateable screen, USB ports and HDMI input with the w2207H model.
