Everything in there is exactly what I'd suggest. I could definitely shave some money off if you need to, but right now I'm just about right at budget. Let me know if you have any questions.

Edit: I almost forgot something important. I left out the fan for the processor heatsink (HS). You can look around and choose your own for this. The reason I chose this specific HS is that it will take any 70mm or 80mm fan. That way, you have a lot of choices on which fan you'd like to use. The 80mm option is probably the best since it will move the most air at teh least volumes. I'd suggest the Panaflo M1A or L1A. I don't know what they're supposed to mean, but there's also an H1A, so I'd assume that they stand for hi, medium, and low. The L1A's the quietest, but also pushes the least air; you get the picture. Another fan I've really liked is the 80mm PC Power & Cooling Silencer. It pushes a lot of air and is completely silent. I actually bought a bunch of them when I was building a computer for a friend (with the case I'm recommending for you, in fact) and changed all 5 of his case fans to Silencers. While their website isn't the easiest in the world to use, I assure you that the fans arrived extremely quickly (I ordered at 10a.m. and they shipped that day). They won't cool like a Vantec Tornado, but you'll still be able to hear in the morning.

Since halkebul didn't add in a sound card, I will say one thing: even if you don't get a board with onboard sound, don't get an Audigy. Why? Because of the issues that so many have had with them. Plus, why buy an old card that has issues when you could buy a new card with no issues. I would recommend the Hercules Fortissimo III or the Philips Acoustic Edge. I haven't heard anything negative at all about the AE and have only heard of a couple of problems people had with the Fortissimo. Otherwise, they're better products.

Just my two cents here:

RAM:
Go with the Cosair 512MB PC3500 XMS CL2, I own two of these and the $*%&(#$ rock! Some of the fastest memory you can own.

CASE:
Cheiftec All. Case-Same as Antec except only weighs 18pounds w/ a window on the side. $99

That setup is nice
Those Albatron 845pe boards are fantastic, I've used a bunch now. even come with a built in 3COM NIC and the board is very inexpensive... two thumbs up

I suggest that you keep an eye on the "Hot Deals" forum, as well as checking out www.techbargains.com a couple of times a day.

I was shopping for components to build a system. Deciding on memory, hard drive specs, which CPU, which case and power supply, all the different mobo's......

and then I found a deal on techbargains.com where I got a Dell 2.4Ghz that, after rebates, should cost me only $250. It uses RDRAM, which didn't excite me because of the cost of memory sticks, but it's quiet, it's pretty, it's fast, and I didn't have to put the damn thing together and worry about RMA'ing bad parts.

Given that, here's my two cents on the suggestions listed on this thread:

(you might also check www.compuplus.com and www.googlegear.com for parts; I've dealt with both more than once and have never had ANY problems, and they beat newegg on prices for some components)

I have a Lite-On CDRW on my machine here at work, and man it's speedy. Can't go wrong there.

If you're going with an AMD processor, the nForce2 boards look like the king daddy's for that cpu. And the nforce@ boards, from what I've read, will support the next line of AMD processors with a BIOS upgrade. Intel makes you get a whole new chipset each time. For an Intel chip, it seems that I liked the SiS 648 chipset .

Sound card: don't know anything about the Audigy's, but I have a friend who loves in Turtle Beach Santa Cruz card. I still have my old SBLive! value in my new machine.

Hard drives: get one really speedy one, around 30gb, for the OS and applications you want to work quickly, and a larger one (80gb+) for data storage (mp3, digital photos, docs, etc). That's just my opinion.

Monitor: 19" definitely, bigger if you have the $$. I have a Viewsonic at home that I'm not overly impressed with. Seems to have a lot of geometric problems at the edges. But it's not bad enough to warrant the $80 shipping to return it. My Viewsonic at work, which is a 17", is great though. If you're doing graphic design, then don't get a LCD screen. Can't produce the full color spectrum you'll need for artwork.

What's the deal? Are you going to tell anyone what you picked? I'm curious to know if these posts ever affect anyone's buying purchases.

The keyboard was actually the only piece of the system to actually not be my absolute only choice. It is black and it's got function buttons on it, which are sometimes nice. Personally, I like natural (split) keyboards, but everyone likes different things.
