Building Graphics HT Computer - upgrading

I would like to upgrade my system and focus on working with graphics. RAW images, not video. I would like to be able to run through my HDTV projector (HDMI or Component) if I like, but would mainly be working with a monitor.

I am not really interested in PC Gaming.

I have a large rack mount case that, I think, will accept most motherboards. I have some good SATA drives that I can swap to a new build. My power supply is about 300W, so I think that I should upgrade. Have a fair DVD writer. Have a good sound card, but would also be good with a board that has 7.1 sound.

FWIW I am using XP Pro. Haven't kept up lately, but Vis-Duh was having a lot of question marks. Has it been debugged? Might upgrade to it later.

Budget is not a big factor. I am primarily looking at load and manipulation speed for my digital image graphics.

I guess i should be looking at

Mobo
CPU
Memory
Power Supply
Video card
maybe some good drives.

I have sort of decided on the following:

EVGA 512-P3-N862-AR GeForce 9600GT Superclocked 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card
$159 after rebate.

Concerned that this outputs to S-video and has a cable that converts to component HDTV. I determined this from the pictures.

Some questions were raised by a review who said this psu is not compatible with some mobos -- because you can't connect both 8-pin and 4-pin at the same time.

Cannot determine if the mobo I have chosen has both an 8-pin AND a 4-pin.

-----------------------------

Would also like to know if there is any significant performance improvement going to the next level of components and what these might be?

Your input greatly appreciated!

Despite calling Vista "Vis-Duh" (this is in the same league of maturity as saying Mac OSUX and Micro$oft and such) I will answer your question.

Assuming you're not overclocking, just get DDR2-800. $77 for a similar G.Skill kit to the one you're looking at now.

Get a Corsair or Seasonic PSU, around 500W. 850W is overkill.

Stick to a P35 board seeing as you don't need SLI, look into the Gigabyte P35 DS3L.

If you're doing a lot of image editing a fast drive may help, look at the WD Caviar 640GB or the Samsung Spinpoint F1 750GB.

If you've got money to burn you could consider getting a Raptor for your page file.

Even though your remarks about "Vis-duh" places you at the SAME level of maturity, I thank you for your kind, though condescending reply and will take a look at your suggestions. Might save me some money and still accomplish my objectives.

Bill, signing out.
