Building in my apartment complex burned (yes, pics)

One of the five buildings in my apartment complex caught fire about 5:00 am Friday morning. As you can see, the building was totally destroyed. Everyone got out safely, thankfully. There's a bit of drama surrounding the story--way too much to go into in one post. Just wanted to tell everyone MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A WORKING SMOKE DETECTOR and GET RENTER'S INSURANCE! Only one tenant (of eight) had insurance! I didn't have it before, but now I do. Most people don't realize how fast fire can spread--I couldn't believe how fast it went myself. I just thank God my building didn't catch fire also. You can tell by the melted vinyl siding on the nearby buidings how hot the fire was. Anyway, that's the end of my PSA for now.

Good thing that you?re OK. I use to rent without insurance until the building I lived in caught on fire. Luckily the fire did not spread to my unit but that was enough to get me to an Allstate office the next day.

The building was about 10 years old. Not sure of the cause yet, but it's being treated as suspicious. The complex owners had the state arson investigators out there and the canine unit. Apparently the couple whose apartment the fire started in watched the fire from the parking lot for about 15 minutes before calling 911. They also didn't try to warn any of the other residents, which included an elderly couple that had to be carried out of their apartment. So yeah, they were either really stupid or were doing something illegal.

i believe that it is required by law to have smoke detectors in apartment buildings. because of a recent death of a family in staten island in 2004, i think they also passed a law to require carbon monoxide detectors as well.

The apartments have hard-wired smoke detectors. I believe they're linked so that if one goes off, they all do.

I wonder if my parents insurance covers my apartment here at school. It's something I should check into I guess. You can't afford to not have it for $10/month.

Probably not. I think it depends on your age. I'm not sure about that--maybe someone else around here knows how that works.
