How old are you? You're doing well in life. I like the country life but maybe not that far out. Seems like a lot of work.
It's usually a lot of work...things are older and what not, you have to drive 30-40 mins for things that you may find in 5-10 mins the city. 2-3 hours for things that may have been a 30-40min trip if you are lucky, but if you can just pick up land and build something new it fixes a lot of that.
My grandmother that just passed away last year got priced out of Palm Beach County for the lifestyle she wanted.
She found an old 5 acre trailer park in the middle of a nice country area in Live Oak Florida. It needed a lot of work, but she found willing help for cheap there. Once she fixed it all up she had 7 units, she moved into one.
She was able to make a living. Plus she loved doing farmer's markets. She'd buy knives, silk flowers, wallets, trinkets from China and overseas and resell them each weekend. It kept her sharp and she had fun.
She was doing it until 80 years old. She was able to pick up two weeks of time share on Ft. Lauderdale beach for her vacations each year. She even bought a new car the year of her death in cash. Nothing spectacular, but new and her's.
There were a lot there that where very wealthy and a lot of poor people too. The poor people though were those you expected to be. Not too smart and immigrant types. Most made a decent living. Many set up their own shop and sold stuff.
I have been thinking about doing that kind of life. If I wasn't trapped in my mortgage now, I may have took that jump and bought the property and built a little house myself.
In town they had all the necessities. Not much designer or luxury stuff, but two major cities were just 2 hours away.
"town" was about 10-15 mins from her place. Great food and services. Nice clean grocery stores and pharmacies. Some products were strange brands from what I am used too, but still just as good.
