Nice property

Not sure I would build a cob house in California due to earthquake.

My wife and I were actually looking at some shipping container cabins for an eventual vacation property.

Some of the adobe buildings from the 1800s are still around in NorCal. I love going to see them.

I looked at shipping containers but couldn't quite wrap my head around actually using one for myself. Where would you want to put a vacation home?

We were looking at property in Mendocino county, north of Fort Bragg. We also were looking in Monterey county. We decided to hold off looking until the economy starts to turn around a bit more though.

Oh seriously? My pics in the OP are just outside of Ukiah and that's Lake Mendocino in the shot. So you guys like the coast then? I prefer being inland a bit since the warm summers are more my thing.

Oh, I thought that was Sonoma Co for some reason

Yeah, my wife wants to be near the coast - I actually don't really have a preference either way.

Sonoma is too pricey for my blood. Also too many people.

Next time you're up in Mendo area we should grab lunch. Schat's Deli in Ukiah is to die for!

No offense taken. I can't seem to edit the thread title and I've asked the mods about that - may be because it's an old thread.

Beautiful! I'm thrilled for you. It seems I can edit the title, one only needs to hit "edit" and then choose the "go advanced."

I did a trial temp edit for you.

If for some reason you can't do this procedure yourself, lmk what you'd like as your new title.

D'oh, I'm retarded! I've never edited a title except by double clicking the thread on the forum itself and that wasn't working. Thanks! I think you deserve adoption for that.

How old are you? You're doing well in life. I like the country life but maybe not that far out. Seems like a lot of work.

It's usually a lot of work...things are older and what not, you have to drive 30-40 mins for things that you may find in 5-10 mins the city. 2-3 hours for things that may have been a 30-40min trip if you are lucky, but if you can just pick up land and build something new it fixes a lot of that.

My grandmother that just passed away last year got priced out of Palm Beach County for the lifestyle she wanted.

She found an old 5 acre trailer park in the middle of a nice country area in Live Oak Florida. It needed a lot of work, but she found willing help for cheap there. Once she fixed it all up she had 7 units, she moved into one.

She was able to make a living. Plus she loved doing farmer's markets. She'd buy knives, silk flowers, wallets, trinkets from China and overseas and resell them each weekend. It kept her sharp and she had fun.

She was doing it until 80 years old. She was able to pick up two weeks of time share on Ft. Lauderdale beach for her vacations each year. She even bought a new car the year of her death in cash. Nothing spectacular, but new and her's.

There were a lot there that where very wealthy and a lot of poor people too. The poor people though were those you expected to be. Not too smart and immigrant types. Most made a decent living. Many set up their own shop and sold stuff.

I have been thinking about doing that kind of life. If I wasn't trapped in my mortgage now, I may have took that jump and bought the property and built a little house myself.

In town they had all the necessities. Not much designer or luxury stuff, but two major cities were just 2 hours away.

"town" was about 10-15 mins from her place. Great food and services. Nice clean grocery stores and pharmacies. Some products were strange brands from what I am used too, but still just as good.

You should clear off an area near the lake and make a campground and call it "Camp OT" and allow all of us to stay there for free.

Ok, maybe I'm not as retarded as I thought. I edited the title using Go Advanced and it changed the top of the thread but not the forum-visible title:

Can I design a house for you? It's a hobby of mine.

Something small and inexpensive that takes advantage of the view.

It will be free and will give me something to do with my brain while not using it at work.

I'm always looking for input!! Design away and I'd love to see what you come up with! Feel free to play around with the small house on the valley side or (if you REALLY want to get creative) I'll fill you in on the challenges and opportunities of the lake-side building site.

Shoot me a PM if you want and I'll give more detail than I've posted here.

Here is a rough idea
First floor

Second

Here is the idea.
The back side faces your view and all the bedrooms, the living room and the kitchen also all face this view. I don't care for the ladder so I put in a small circular staircase instead.

I also put two bedrooms upstairs.

Now the living room is two stories with the loft being across the middle upstairs.

This design has an 800 sq foot foot print. Could make the living room smaller etc etc.

Thoughts?

my house:

I have seen some awesome hillside california designs.

The neatest was one that had brides inbetween parts of the house and the bridges were over open ground etc. Really neat deisgn.

Might be a little over her budget

Whoa, awesome!!! I think 1200+ sq ft may be a little big for what we can accomplish this year (both from time and $$) but can we swap some notes on PM tomorrow? I think what we build this year will not be on the lake side and, given the location of the hill and road/driveway, you may have some additional thoughts about layout. I'm trying to cobble together some property lines and topo maps between now and then to give you an idea.

I love having someone to throw new ideas around with!! Excited!
