Background:
I grew up in NorCal. We currently live in Seattle. I'd love to move back to where I grew up someday. This is the view I grew up with; can you blame me? But I've spent 7 years trying to coming to terms with the fact that I could never move back to that exact spot again; property would be too expensive, no pieces would be large enough for our needs, etc.
My husband and I have an offer on a property that is a pretty good fit for our needs. 20 acres, nice view, gently sloped, etc.

Pretty, right?
We're pretty close to closing on it, although there are some issues with the water quality that we're still mulling over. Not issues with human consumption, but may not be good for plants.
HOWEVER, I just found this for sale!! 12 acres, needs a well and some development, and I haven't seen the actual piece yet - maybe it's too sloped or something that would make it obviously impractical.
I spent all this time trying to get over my fantasy of moving back onto my lake, and we've got a good apparent deal going with the first piece of property... We get to go see the second piece next week. If there's nothing that knocks it out, do you think we should go for it? It would mean letting the first piece go (and someone else is waiting in the wings to buy that one) and if the deal fell through for some reason on the second piece we'd be back to the drawing board...
Anyway that IS a beautiful place. There had only been some 8 views on the pictures when I looked so maybe you have the first crack at it?
I would hate to see the price of 12 acres on a lake in California. If you can get it though, well... boat parties at AC707's place!
Pshh 15min is too far to drive for dinner. It has nothing to do with Cali. Most of Cali is in cities. I can only imagine how some of those people in Wyoming or the Dakotas have to drive for stuff.
I live in Montana, and I can honestly say I have driven 100 miles (each way) for a meal.
What is the price on those properties?
7 years of dual income, no kids, 70 hour work weeks, beat up cars, shared housing and no travel.
The real question is how much it'll cost to build a house on the property we wind up with.

And that my dear...is the understatement of the century.
I'm in the process of building a house. Well. Trying. Weather hasn't allowed us to get a foundation in yet. I'll have over $35,000 sunk in well & septic before even digging a hole for the house itself. I'm guessing you'll be even more than that.
You going to have 10's of thousands in clearing it looks like. Plus lord only knows how much to get any sort of utility to your property.
I bet you have six digits sunk before you even get a hole in the ground for the house.
Best of luck. Either property looks beautiful and I'm envious of both choices. But I don't know how I couldn't turn down property with a lake on it.
Yeah. But living in King County in Washington state is nearly as bad, so I'm used to it.
Wow that's some awesome views. If water quality is the only issue I'd go with it and just invest in a whole house filtration system. Price them out before you seal the deal though, I'm really not sure how much they really go for, it's not a britta filter, it's a bit more then that.
The only drawback to living out there is fire. The first thought that came to mind after seeing your first pic, was welcome to your new tinderbox. No offense, the country is beautiful out there, but one idiot with piss poor camp fire skills, and your multimillion dollar home and surrounding views turn to a negative.
Nice scenery. I don't think I could do it though. 1 hour drive just to get food? What kind of high speed internet can you get out there, satellite? What's the emergency response time if you need quick medical help?
Must be nice to have money. That area is so not for me though, grew up in the city and would need some closeness to stores and other people. Scenery is just meh.
