thanks for the help. here's a question, as I'm weary of a mini case. I'm leaning towards a mid tower case for the room, but as I understand, cases that look like they have more room don't necessarily mean it will fit components easily. is there any suggestions for a good brand that makes PC cases?

Any mid-tower case from Fractal Design, Corsair, Phanteks, and probably NZXT will do the job just fine. The one thing I'd take into consideration is what form factor your motherboard is. If it's a standard ATX size, then literally any ATX Mid-Tower case is fine. If it's Micro-ATX, then it's going to be either Fractal Design, Corsair, and/or Cooler Master.
And while you can stick a Micro-ATX motherboard in a big, ATX, mid-tower case, you're just going to have too much open space that's literally going to go to waste.
Also, when it comes to fitting components inside the case, I'd be more worried about the GPU. But even then, that should be a non-issue if you're going for a standard, dual-fan solution.
Lastly, a 970 is not going to be powerful enough to run intense games at 1440p and at 144 Hz. For that, you're going to need a GTX 980 Ti at the very minimum. Even then, you won't always get high FPS for every single game you run at that resolution on that card. But G-SYNC should be able to smooth out those low FPS whenever they occur.
