Hey guys,
I'm just entering this world of building computers. Thus far, I've been running on a Pentium MMX 233 (I know i know, laugh all you want, but so far i've been held back by financial issues). well, now i finally got some dough in my pocket and decided to get a new comp. as any other novice, i turned to dell and compaq at the first though of a new computer, but was disgusted at what they offer for the buck. then i started researching on how to build my own comp. as u can imagine, its all pretty overwhelming for me right now. so i would appreciate any help i can get from anyone. looking to build 1.4Ghz comp with min 256 M ram. what would be better? AMD or Intel? what's a good motherboard to use? looking to spend around $600 - 700. no higher than $750. what do you guys suggest?
if you guys have any concers, please email me .

Thanks for all your help...

Congratulations on your wise decision to not be ripped off! and welcome to ATforums.

First off for prices you will want to check Here there are oothe places too but this one is my favorite. If you are going in that price you are going to have to go AMD maybe a 1Ghz Tbird overclocked to the speed you are wanting. Since your budget is so low you will probably want to go with a board with a VIA KT133A chipset on it. I reccomend either ABIT KT7A, MSI (Microstar) K7T Turbo, or IWILL KK266. For RAM you are going to want to get Crucial it is less expensive than Mushkin. Check in the Hot Deals forum for anything you might need. Also for that price you are not going to be able to get a monitor. The comp alone will run you that, if not more.

Anyways if you need any help then feel free to email me at: reznor@ecr.net. Good luck to you!

IMHO I think the overstock barebone deal is sweet. I just finished one for less than $400 after rebates. Mainly from other hot deals threads.

You gota love a 30 gig 7200 rpm for $79, and free cdrw AR. I didn't spend much on cpu or video card though. This is not for gaming at all. The only drawback is 3 PCI, and 1Ghz processor is max cpu support. That price includes 17" monitor but no OS either. Just a thought.

On a side note building is much more fun than buying a "this is what we have" model over here.
