Hey all, ive been a "dorment" anandtech forum reader for a long time, but since im going to be building a new computer i think id get some advise from the experts

first of all the standard answers:

1. What YOUR PC will be used for. That means what types of tasks you'll be performing.
I will mainly be using the computer for gaming, some HDV capturing/editing/encoding and general internet usage

2. What YOUR budget is. A price range is acceptable as long as it's not more than a 20% spread
my budget is around £700

3. What country YOU will be buying YOUR parts from.
im buying from the uk, the computer ive specced up at the moment is from http://www.ebuyer.com

4. IF YOU have a brand preference. That means, are you an Intel-Fanboy, AMD-Fanboy, ATI-Fanboy, nVidia-Fanboy, Seagate-Fanboy, WD-Fanboy, etc, etc, etc, you get the picture.
i support whoever has the fastest card in the present generation, so this means intel/nvidia at the moment

5. If YOU intend on using any of YOUR current parts, and if so, what those parts are.
Benq 241 24" Widescreen Moniitor
Lite-on DL DVD Burner
Speakers
Keyboard/Mouse

6. IF YOU have searched and/or read similar threads.
Yes... and based on few of them have come up with a system

7. IF YOU plan on overclocking or run the system at default speeds.
i do plan to overclock, but nothing extreme

this is the current machine i have specced up, please let me know if i have missed any components out, my current machine (2500xp+) is the last time i built a pc, so i may be a little rusty/out of date

i would particular be interested in if alternatives to components i have selected would be needed/better choice:

Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 £115.68
ASUS P5K E WIFI AP £97.85
OCZ 2GB Kit DDR2 800MHz
PC2 6400 CL 4 4 4 15 PLATINUM XTC £64.99
Antec Sonata III With 500W EarthWatts £71.64
Thermalright Ultra-120 £34.47
Antec TriCool 120mm Blue LED £10.45
Point Of View 8800GTS 640MB £219.85
WD5000AAKS 500GB SATA II 16MB £63.44

TOTAL =£678.37

thanks for your time

Raj.

thanks for the reply, i dont really want to spend additional money on a power supply because the case comes with a half decent one, i dont know whether i should wait until crysis/ut3 come out before i upgrade because i really want to play those games with decent settings, but their only a month or so away and even if nvidia did release their 9 series graphics card in nov they would be reallly expensive... decisions decision!

Do a google for "overclock e2160". You will be pleasantly surprised... cheaper yet more powerful processor.

I dunno about your build, but you get an "A+" for the good form in your post. Nice, concise, and covers every aspect of the requested build. I'm not gonna mention any names that may start with a "B" and end with an "N", that are requesting exactly this type of building request form.... But, if I was a guy who's name started with a "B" and ended with an "N", and had seen a request formulated like this, I'd be responding because if I didn't, people would think I was a cranky chowder-head....or worse.

thanks guys!

@nurn, wow that processor really does kick ass and would save me £50, im definately gonna consider it, will do a bit more research...!

i have a question about memory speed, the e6750 runs at a stock 8x333, , with a front side bus of 1333, ive read a while back that the multiplier is locked on core 2 duo processors, is this still the case with the p5k and is there anyway to bypass the lock?

the memory i am purchasing pc6400 is 400mhz in FSB speed, is this correct? so if this was to set 1:1 at stock the memory would be underclocked by 67mhz right? so that means i have a leeway of only that much + however much the memory overclocks, so it could run at 8x400 = 3.2ghz without oc the memory, does that sound right? (sorry all these numbers confuse me )

if this is the case.... then would i be better getting a E6700 which runs at 10x266, and id have a much bigger leeway for overclocking because of the multiplier? i.e. 10x400 = 4ghz potential (yes im aware i probably wouldnt reach anywhere near there!)

similar for the e2160, default 9x200, ... 9x400 = 3.6ghz

do you guys think it would be better purchasing higher rated memory i.e. PC8500?

thanks guys, much appreaciated
