Just trying to build a computer for my daughter as a Xmas gift.
I am using an old case. I replaced the power supply (powmax 400) and added:
Abit NF&-S V2 motherboard
Radeon 9600 SE 128 MB video
AMD Athlon ZP 2600 333 Barton processor
Crucial PC 2700 512 MB RAM
Lite-On 48x12x48 CD-RW
WD 7200 rpm 120 GB hard drive
Antec 80 cm lited fan
IIyama 15 " LCD monitor
Problem: When I boot up, the system boots up then shuts down.. I think I may have the front panel indicator and switches hooked up wrong. Is the little arrowhead on the connectors from the case to the motherboard (ie HDD LED, PW SW, etc) represent the + pin?
Thanks

Generally yes, but you can't really put the switches on backwards as they are simple momentary contact switches and work just as well either way. You can put the LEDs on backwards, but that would only make them fail to light, not keep the cptr from working properly. Perhaps you have an LED connected to the standby or sleep pins, which might cause it to go into standby or sleep mode immediately.
. That condition can also happen when you have a CPU fan connected improperly or if the CPU fan speed sensor is malfunctioning. Newer Asus mobos for AMD have CPU protection that requires a speed sensing fan be connected to the CPU Fan connector (specifically marked). If no fan is connected or the speed sensor is not working, you will have to connect a good fan to the CPU Fan connector and reset the CMOS before the computer will work again.

Make sure that the motherboard isn't touching drive cages or anything like that...I'm not sure if I'm understanding your symptom correctly, but if your computer turns on for a second or two and then shuts off it's usually a short caused by the motherboard touching something it's not supposed to by being improperly grounded.

The bios may be detecting a heat problem and shutting you down.

I neglected to mention that I also get one long beep and then one short beep. This repeats all after the unit shuts down.

This is what I found on Award Beep Codes (googled)

1 Long Beep indicates a problem with memory in the first bank, usually an unseated memory module
1 Long, 2 Short indicates a problem with the video card or the memory on it
1 Long, 3 short also indicates a problem with video or the memory on video card
Continuous this usually indicates a problem with the memory, but sometimes is a video problem

Hope this gets you pointed in the right direction.

Just a follow-up. The heatsink was reversed. Problem solved. Thanks all for the input!
