This is basically a continuation of my thread here:

http://forums.anandtech.com/me...id=83&threadid=2179539

Now moved to a more appropriate board for what it turned into, and to celebrate the fact that I came to my senses (ie: no more Maximus Extreme!)

As for the basic posting template:

---------------------------------------------

1. What YOUR PC will be used for. That means what types of tasks you'll be performing.
1) Video Editing with minor rendering for effects, though possibly getting into that stuff more 2) Playing awesome games (in that order)
2. What YOUR budget is. A price range is acceptable as long as it's not more than a 20% spread
about 1000$ without monitor, case, DVD, and the little things
3. What country YOU will be buying YOUR parts from.
Canada (though getting some parts from the US is not out of the question if I'd save a lot
4. IF YOU have a brand preference. That means, are you an Intel-Fanboy, AMD-Fanboy, ATI-Fanboy, nVidia-Fanboy, Seagate-Fanboy, WD-Fanboy, etc, etc, etc, you get the picture.
I am an ATI fanboy, and a Nintendo fanboy, (among other things) but these days my brand loyalty has slipped, Bottom line, I'd LEAN towards ATI, but HDs gotta be WD or Seagate though
5. If YOU intend on using any of YOUR current parts, and if so, what those parts are.
DVD-R / Case
6. IF YOU have searched and/or read similar threads.
Long time lurker...
7. IF YOU plan on overclocking or run the system at default speeds.
mild tweaking, nothing too crazy since I want good stability
8. WHEN do you plan to build it?
AS SOON AS MY REFUND CHECK COMES!

--------------------------------------

Ok here's what I'm leaning towards now:

- Q6600 <--pretty much set in stone

- P5K-E <--the part I'm iffiest about

- OCZ Reaper 4GB 1032 2x2 Kit <--its all the same right?

- 2x Asus Radeon 3870 (Crossfire) <--convinced by recent tomshardware article but open to better suggestions

- Corsair 620W power supply <--good enough for all these Cores, GPUs, and HDs?

- 1x, 2x, or 3x Seagate Barracuda 500GB w/32MBcache <--depending on how much money I have left over (eventually I want 1 system drive and 2 data drives in Raid 1 or even Raid 0)

***OPTIONAL - Promise Fasttrak TX2300 or TX4310 External Raid card
(Is this even necessary? That much better then the onboard?)

So whaddy'all think? Am I doing better then my previous wacky notions???

Gigabyte P35-DS3L to save some cash.
DDR2-800 should be plenty. Don't need to overpay for fancy RAM.
Single 8800GTS should be plenty depending on the monitor you have (1680x1050 or less). There's been one on sale for $170.
Good Choice on PSU.
Get the Samsung Spinpoint F1 750GB or Western Digital 640GB, best hard drives out there right now for the price.
No need for a raid card.

Hmm...

Well first off there's no Raid on the DS3L so I WOULD need a RAID card... also the ram is basically the same price as non-bargain basement 800... as far as i understand it should give me some room to maneuver tweak-wise, no?

You don't like my crossfire idea? tomshardware voted that best bang for your buck just now - I want a GPU setup that will go as far as my Radeon AIW 8500 did (ie: my current system)

my other thought was to borrow some basic PCIe card from a friend and wait for the new ATIs in June

I'll look into the HDs but the price I just got quoted for the barracudas (just over 100$ each) was pretty sweet IMHO

Try the DS3R for raid if you don't need SLI or crossfire. You can use the $80 2x2gb 1000MHz Gskill kit on newegg to save some money over Reaper.
3870 isn't nearly as good as 8800GTS 512MB and crossfire won't necessarily scale well in all cases. So a single 8800GTS will do for now until new cards come out in a month. If you want, you can add a second 8800GTS later on or upgrade to the ATI 4000 series which are supposed to be a lot better than the 3000 series.

Agree with this. And this particular kit is currently selling for cheaper than the DDR-800 GSkill 2x2s at Newegg right now ($75):

GSkill DDR2-1000 2 x 2 kit

Personally I'd stay away from OCZ RAM. Typically overrated and often underperforms similar spec'd alternatives from quality manufacturers like Crucial, Mushkin, and GSkill. I know people will disagree with me, but that's my opinion.

Don't be using RAID-0 and expect an actual real-world performance increase.

From one nintendo fanboy to another .

So you guys *don't* like the P5K-E?

Anybody know of any better video cards for editing - or I basically won't go wrong with whatever?

Any real drawbacks to crossfire?

Drawbacks to crossfire: Possible driver issues, dubious support across all games, non-linear performance gain from adding another card, false economy of later adding a mediocre card when buying a single better card makes more sense... just a few drawbacks.

Crossfire and SLI only really make sense if you have two very powerful cards so you can run games at massive resolutions on very large monitors.

Video editing will mostly rely on your CPU.

There's nothing particularly wrong with the P5K-E, just that there are better boards for less money!

Ok! near final specs......

- Q6600
- GA EP35-DS4
- OCZ Reaper 1066 2x2GB
- WD6400AAKS (WD 640GB)
- Corsair 620W

Jury is still out on GPU... probably 8800GTS

getting better?

1. Good PSU brand, Corsair is top notch. 620 is overkill for this system however. Corsair makes a nice 450W version for ~ $70 or so AR.

2. RAM is a bit much unless you're going to try some heavy overclocking. DDR2-800 is fine for standard use, -1000 if you're going to do some mild overclocking.

3. 8800GTS is a good choice if building today, new stuff is coming from both ATI and Nvidia in about a month or so FYI so think carefully here.

4. If you're going to overclock that Q6600 by any serious amount, good cooling is a must as they run hot. I'd go for one of the newer Yorkfield quads myself, but that will cost you extra $.

I'm pretty much for sure ordering this week:

1) I'm going to soon have a couple more hard drives (2-3) then just this one, and *possibly* crossfire down the road - nothing wrong with having a better PSU, right?

(cue spooky music) "or... is there?!" (DUH-DUH-DUMMMMM...)

2) I find the RAM thing super-confusing - people I ask keep contradicting themselves ("go 800" "1066 is better" "ocz sucks" "gskill was DOA" "there's no difference" "its everything in the universe") making me flip/flop until I just said "screw it, I'm going with my first choice"... I need a suggestion for good mild OCing ram... I'm going to be buying from microbytes.com or NCIX.com or directcanada.com

3) I'm considering just getting the cheapest PCI-e GPU out there or borrowing from a friend and then waiting for the new ATIs...

4) I have ZERO experience when it comes to cooling - anybody have any specific suggestions for what to get for these components? It can get warm in my apartment, so that is something that concerns me

sorry to go on and on - just trying to figure this out once and for all

EDIT : I'm thinking I can't go too wrong with this GPU for 27$ to get by for a couple months, would be nice to keep as a backup in case something ever fritzed out, no?

EDIT #2 : ok for RAM i'm now thinking this patriot 800 4/4/4/12 the price is right at least:

Corsair 620HX is a great PSU -- I have it and it's NOT overkill for a quad-based system, especially if you're OCing.

One of the top air coolers right now and not that expensive either is the Xigmatek S1283:

NCIX.com link

Only caveat is that it's pretty tall ~ 159mm (similar to a Tuniq 120) so be sure your case is wide enough to fit it.

Just placed my order - thanks everyone! Final parts:

PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750 Quad 750W $134.99
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 $218.88
Gigabyte EP35-DS4 $176.64
ASUS Radeon HD2400 Pro $37.26
Patriot EP 4GB 2X2GB PC2-6400 DDR2-800 CL4-4-4-12 EPP $95.99
WD SE16 640GB SATA2 $103.26

- switched from Corsair 620W to Silencer 750w because it was the same price, has good reviews, and has the wires for crossfire "overdrive" without need for adapter

- will be using my old Antec tower

- waiting until install to go to the local store and see about cooling

- Gonna wait for new ATIs, then keep the HD2400 as backup

Thanks again everyone! You guys are awesome! and additional comments are always welcome...
