Well if you're only running 1600 x 900 rez a 1Gb card should still give you great performance, but its hard to justify the 1Gb card when the 2Gb is so close within reach. Haha!

EDIT: Im unsure if the shaders are able to be unlocked on the 1Gb versions or not, but going with a 2Gb would definately give you atleast a chance for an unlock situation. That should get between 3 - 5% performance increase and essentially you'd be getting an hd6970 if successful.

The Twin Frozr II 6950 2GB can be unlocked. I'm not aware of any 1GB cards that can be unlocked.

EDIT2: If you havent purchased the harddrive yet, I would take aphelion's suggestion and go with the Samsung F3, its $5 cheaper and I'd trust Samsung over Hitachi anyday.

The Hitachi 7K1000.D is the new hot stuff HDD. It's got a single 1TB platter versus two 500GB platters in the F3. However if the $5 difference in price between the F3 and 7K1000.D makes the difference between a 6950 2GB and a 6950 1GB, you should get the F3.

EDIT: Another idea for shaving a little more off the cost popped into my head. Do you need 1TB of HDD space? The WD Blue 500GB is only $40 AP. That should seal the deal on the TFII.

Is it really only 3 states that pay tax on Newegg purchases? I thought the CA warehouse serviced the western half of the US and every purchase that comes from this warehouse = taxed I feel like I got the really short end of the stick if its only 3 states >_>

CA, NJ, and TN IIRC.

I just dropped the DVD drive and will put in a crappy one I have laying around till I can afford a better one.

But it wont be too long till I can afford a $20 drive, quite honestly. So I guess this is what ill end it at.

My wallet weeps slowly as my anxiety preps for serious fun.

Just make sure that your DVD drive is SATA because the motherboard you chose doesnt support IDE. Would hate to have you get all the parts and not be able to install an operating system on it.

Windows 7 install from USB to the rescue!

Actually, I always install Windows from a USB stick if possible, even on machines with DVD drives because it is a hell of a lot faster.

Its the aforementioned build with the subtraction of the DVD Drive and the addition of the TwinFrzr

That's an insane build for under $800. I'm sure you'll be more than satisfied with the outcome.

Many thanks to all of you guys who both helped me save quite alot of money, and helped me re-invest it back into the build.

Its greatly appreciated. Truly.

Ill be sure to post pictures as soon as I get it all up and running.

Hey guys, its a bit early for build questions but im curious as to the whole unlocking 6950 -> 6970 deal.

Would this cause any sort of issues due to the limitations on part of the PSU and lack of cooling?
Im a bit weary of shortening its life span by running it too hot or overclocking it without the proper PSU.

I'm not really sold on the Scout as an aesthetically pleasing case (I like my NZXT M59 so maybe I just have weird tastes?) And it looks similiar to lower priced cases from CM from what I see.

That aside, I don't think you'll have to worry about the heat output from your GPU with that nice of a cooler attached to it, provided you have adequate airflow in a room that isn't 95F+ at all times Modern cards are amazing in what they'll give you for the heat they'll output.

Doesn't mean ignore the temps, just don't worry unless your idle temps are higher than what you like/think is safe. If unsure just ask around once your system is up and running and everything has been burned in sufficiently. I'd give it a week or two of just normal usage before asking if your temps are high/low/average/nonsensical.

Lack of cooling? You're getting the 2GB Twin Frzr, right?

Anyway, don't worry about the PSU. The +12V rail holds more importance than sheer wattage, and that Seasonic has a whopping 40A...it should power your unlocked card just fine.

Your issue will be more about the shaders and overclock. It's possible that you'll really get a crippled 6970, and have no worries.

It's also possible that you'll get a proc that didn't pass all tests (or was from a wafer where another proc didn't pass all tests) and was demoted to 6950 specs with extreme prejudice. If you do get one of these lesser procs, unlocking and overclocking may introduce instability and/or artifacting...if this happens, start by clocking down, which usually resolves that bad stuff while still giving you the extra pipes for a slight perf boost.

Another issue is the memory clock...or more precisely, the memory itself. For example, years ago I had a vanilla 6800 NV40, and was able to unlock the extra pipes and vertex shader (same as the 6800GT). To get near-6800GT performance, I also needed to overclock the memory, but alas, the vendor used lower-performing memory, and I was forced to clock down the memory back to stock (otherwise random, unrecoverable system hangs occurred multiple times a day). I still got huge improvements by unlocking, but not as close to 6800GT perf as I had hoped because I couldn't overclock the memory with any kind of stability.

If MSI is using the exact same memory on the 6950 as they do with the 6970, you should be fine, tho.

I believe it is safer to do a shader unlock instead of flashing a full 6970 bios. From what I know, the reference designs of the 6950 and 6970 do NOT have the same memory, and people have encountered troubles down the the line because of that. I really don't know much about it though, some one who has tried unlocking these cards would be able to guide you much more than I can.

Of course, just remember that unlocking shaders and overclocking are both very YMMV, and voids your warranty.

 OP, unlocking and overclocking always have an element of luck. The worst that would happen is that the unlock would make the card unable to boot into Windows. Since you have a Z68, that's not a big deal because you could just switch to the IGP and flash the original BIOS back.

If you plan on using a credit card to order you can try price matching the i5 price from Microcenter $179.99 and order from NCIX.com depending on what city/state/country you live in you could save up to $25 on it when compared to Newegg's price. I just did this yesterday and the pricematch was approved within the day.

Did this too Id suggest this though there standard shipping probably will be a little slow considering the warehouse is in cali.

According to the bit i've read, however, it seems that some come equipped with switches which when switched unlock the shaders.

As such, I doubt it would cause a warranty issue if swapped back, no?

I'm not aware of any cards that come pre-flashed with an unlocked BIOS. That would be pretty sweet though. Got a link?

That model is an example of the aforementioned.

If you look around in the ratings you're sure to come across it various times.
The dual bios allows for such.

"Pros: It unlocked. Flip of a switch."
-N/A

"Other Thoughts: Dual BIOS switch is very tiny and hard to see, it's right next to the Crossfire port.
Takes only seconds to switch and boot up with 1536 shaders."
-Brofessional

"Pros: Unlocked the 6970 shaders with a flick of the bios switched, then OC'd to 6970 speeds in about 5 seconds with Trixx. Hasn't gone over 70 degrees yet under gaming, idles around 38. Coming from my GTX275 that would routinely hit 90 during gaming, that is nice."

Here's a photo of the Dual BIOS switch:

Hey guys, the last of my parts came in this morning.

Any tips or relevant guides on how to assemble the beast?
I have an idea on most of it, but i'd rather have a source from which to cross-check.
