I'm a newbie and am planning on building my own PC. Before I take the plunge I'd like to indulge the forum for some advice / opinions.

Here's my hardware selections.

Component - Manufacturer - Model
Motherboard - ASUS - A7N8X Deluxe
CPU - AMD - ATHLON XP 2400
CPU Heatsink - Included with CPU
Memory - Crucial - 2 - 512MB DDR SDRAM
Monitor - Samsung - 172T
Case - Antec - SX-1040B II - Black Full-Tower Case with 400 Watt Power Supply and Front Media Ports - Supports ATX Mainboards
CD/DVD - Lite-on - Any suggestions?
CD/DVD (R/RW) - Sony - DRU-500A
HDD - Maxtor - 120GB 7200RPM Hard Drive 8MB OEM 6Y120P0
Sound - Using motherboard sound for now
Video - ATI - ALL IN WONDER RADEON 8500 128MB AGP
Keyboard/Mouse - Microsoft - Bluetooth
OS - Microsoft - XP Professional

Any conflicts?

Any horror stories with similar configuration?

Just asking for some "professional feedback".

nForce2 sound rocks so could negate the possible future sound card upgrade. Lite-on makes quality CD burners. Looking good!

I take that as meaning that there would be no need to purchase a sound card and might not even be a wise investment later on?

Correct. Unless there's a sound card out there that has a specific unique feature that ya want. Otherwise, nVidia audio saves ya from buying a sound card. It's sound quality (somewhere in between an audigy1 and audigy2) and low cpu utilization are both quite impressive.

I would assume that "quality" would be measured in terms of power. This case has a 400W PS.

It might be, but you never know. It might be 400w but is it reliable and stable in the long run. Not all PSU's are created equal. I'm not an expert on this, just sorta passing along info from this board. I would suggest looking at this though for a quick thought.

and this from amd's website

Following the second like that you provided, AMD lists Antec on their site. IT STATES:

Each of the power supply manufacturers listed has power supply solutions that are recommended for their capability to supply appropriate power on the +5V, +3.3V, +12V, and +5vsb power rails. This list is not intended to be a comprehensive listing of all power supply manufacturers that support AMD Athlon? XP processors but is rather a list of legacy power supplies tested by AMD in the past.

Reading that, I "assume" that Antec probably fits the bill

hi,
looks great to me.
just a word of warning, there are some problems (i had some and so have others) with the nforce2 enhanced ide drivers and winxp. i kept getting disk errors and had to go back to the default drivers. all in all, selection looks great.
as for cd/dvd - i'd pick the samsung 48/12/48-16x dvd from dell for $68
