Building website

I'll be travelling in about a week.

I might have spare time on the road to develop my first website, on the laptop. It's going to have a forum, of course (probably phpbb2); for the rest of the site I'll look into Wordpress or Mambo.

Downloaded AppServ. Is there any other free software that might be useful?

And more importantly: once I find a host, will I be able to transfer all my files and have the website function? Obviously the .html, .php files can be, but what about the mySql database files and other stuff?

for the database stuff you will probably have to do some type of export/import.

I cant remember which once but there are a couple content managment systems that store all of their data in plain text files. In that case you can just copy all of the files over and be done. But now that I think about it the cms that I'm thinking of might be for a wiki site. I dono, it has been a while.

You can likely get any of it to work, but some of it might take more doing than others.

Okay, from the above two responses sounds like it may be better to just get my host online and work from there?

What if in the future I want to change hosts, would it be a pain to do?

That depends a lot on the software. If the CMS and forum have import/export, then it shouldn't be any harder to set it up on a new server than it was on the first server.
