If eits comes in here, he'll tell you what's up. If not, you should look for his posts in the two other threads posted by HN. For some exercises, you should probably consult your doctor about seeing a physical therapist. They deal with a lot of back injuries that can be alleviated through exercise. You could also find a good chiropractor in the area.

Hang yourself up-side-down with those boots like Brandon had in the movie The Goonies, and then do small range twisting motions to strengthen the small muscles in your back.

Agreed. A physical therapist would be an excellent place to start.

I have gone to both a physical therapist and a chiropractor. I apologize for not elaborating more. When I do stretch and do the exercises that I was told, it tends to help for a day or two. But, I am beginning to feel that the exercises from the physical therapy and the chiropractor are not enough. Could diet be playing a role? Quality of shoes (support)? Also, my back seems to feel worse after a night of drinking. Could alcohol play a role in my back getting better?

For the alcohol bit, I'm honestly not sure if its effects on metabolism and overall body "chemistry" would affect your back directly. However, alcohol does tend to decrease sensitivity to pain, as well as overall judgment, decision-making abilities, and coordination. Thus, when drinking, you might be more likely to move/flex/stretch in ways that you wouldn't when sober, thereby aggravating the condition.

i've had 2 partially bulging discs for a few years now. i still lift regularly however i steer clear of specific exercises dealing w/heavy weights and my lower back.

deadlifts, squats, and now bent over rows are pretty much completely out of my routine. i also wear a belt when doing heavy lifting just to keep everything tight back there.

also a bed can make a huge difference. i just went on vacation and slept like a baby the past week and woke up w/very little back pains. my bed at home now sucks ass and we plan on getting a new one in the somewhat near future.

wish i had more advice. i had a few exercises my doctor gave me to do but now that i steer clear of certain exercises my back feels better and those exercises don't seem to do too much.

Just as a temporary thread diversion: when I hear of a drinker complaining of back pain, I put pancreatitis on the differential. It's highly unlikely given the fact that you're posting on ATHF, but it's never bad to consider other non-musculoskeletal possibilities.

Also the physical therapy and exercises for the lower back could go on for months to years and varies from person to person depending on discipline and dedication. We are not yet living in the day and age where back pain can be quickly and permanently solved without collateral damage and side effects. However, with hard work on your part in therapy, I think you can beat it and keep out of trouble by continuing vigilance with your core exercises and workout routine.

core strengthening exercises (mostly exercises where you are constantly engaging your core in order to stabilize yourself... arms over head exercises or twisting with weights/resistance are good) and find a chiropractor who does cox technique.
