Guessing they saw one cow dead and it never phased them that they should not bolt to go check it out. Then they made the connection, but it was too late.

I used to work with a woman years ago whose family had a large dairy/cow farm. Their cows kept dying, hundreds in fact. Took tens of thousands of dollars to find the cause of death and tens more to find the source. Electrocution from a utility company's high voltage line, shorting through the natural watershed. When it rained or the water table rose, it would short this line and then any cows standing in a bit of water or drinking from a certain well, would get electrocuted.

10 years of legal fighting with the utility company, who hid behind some obscure laws or precedent from 100 years ago, they received something like five million dollar settlement.
