Bull-fighting. Stupid? Or really stupid?

I always managed to bring forth a chuckle when I hear of a bull-fighter who is killed or one of the many morons who run in the streets in Spain every year and often times somebody gets trampled by a bull. How dumb is that? Its even more idiotic than fox hunting.

I guess Stupid is one thing you could call it. I guess some traditions SHOULD end. I mean, just cause it's been a sporty for 100's of years I don't see why you should keep doing it. Who knows.

Hey, I don't feel like being chased by a bunch of bulls down a street, and I don't feel like I need to 'fight' a bull in a ring.... but if those people feel they want to do it, and if that's their tradition, more power to ya. Sometimes the fighter wins, sometimes the bull wins

Pretty dumb tradition - I mean hell these bulls are slowly killed with small spears!

Yaye! I know what to do today - hows about we go down to the local bull-ring and watch a dumb animal getting slowly killed by some flaunty moron in colorful clothing!!

Skoorb: It may seem silly or stupid to you or I, but then again, what makes it any worse than, say, hunting deer with a crossbow for sport? I don't feel the need to do either, but there's nothing wrong with them either. Every culture has their own way (mostly) men show their 'bravado' and prowess. Some are weirder than others.

I think the diference between that and hunting is a Hunter doesn't ( Intentionally ) kill his prey slowly. Also, I doubt the Bull Fighter is gonna be cooking himself any Bull Steaks after the fight! Could just be me

Chef: Sport hunters don't always eat what they kill either. The idea behind bull fighting is that there is a very real danger of getting hurt or killed by the bull, and the bullfighter using his/her skills to avoid injury and kill the bull..... Also, from what I understand, the meat of the bull is actually sold and consumed after the bullfight.

and the bull is killed with a sword.....

A spear is only used if the "bull fighter" does a poor job.

Darts are used to make the bull more agressive.

<< Sport hunters don't always eat what they kill either. >>

A real hunter eats his prey, thats just the way I look at it. So maybe we shouldn't hunt anymore but that is for another discussion. Most hunters I know, and I think MOST hunters period do eat what they kill. Trophie hunters( hunters that kill for the trophy alone ) are usually rich pricks who shoot animals from their Range Rovers. Most hunters, though they may hang a trophy, do eat their prey.

tagej & others

It is different from hunting in the pure sense because a real hunter will kill his prey - not drawing out the process, but doing it efficiently...and then consume it. I know these bulls may be sold after but not before a shi*ty last while on earth.

Now, sometimes a deer may run away and die slowly from a wound, but that it not the intention - it is always the intention with bull fighting for a long drawng out death.

My opinion of hunters who do not use their prey is that they need better things to do. I know some people like sport fishing, but I find it rather pointless. You catch a fish, rip its lips up, and throw it back in... at least one defense is that fish are probably stupider/less suceptible to pain than bulls...but I don't really care for sport fishing either.

Guy goes to Mexico sits down in a restaurant.

He asks the waiter for the best dish the restaurant has.

The waiter brings back a strange dish, but the man tries it.

"This is the most delicious thing I have ever eaten!" Exclaims the man. "What is it."

The waiter said "We have bullfights at the coliseum every day, when the bull is killed, we cook him and serve it. That is bulls balls."

The man was taken aback and slightly shocked, but the dish was so tasty he finished his meal.

A few days later, the man was on his way back to the states, but he wanted that delicious meal again.

The waiter remembered him, and said " I bet you're back for the special"

"That's right lay it on me." The guy was giddy with excitement.

A few minutes later, the waiter serves the dish.

The man eats it. Not too good. He calls the waiter over.

"Waiter, the meal you gave me the other night was the greatest tasting meal I have ever had. Tonight it's barely edible. It's really mealy and stringy."

The waiter said "The bull didn't lose today"

I don't mind people killing animals and eating them. What gets me is when people call killing animals "sport". What is so sporting about joe schmoe walking out in the middle of the woods, sitting in a blind (ambushing), and blowing a hole in an animal with a high powered rifle? I just don't see the challenge. It would, however, be sporting if joe schmoe tied some fake antlers to his head and tried taking on the animal fair and square. I would pay to see that.

Hey, bull-fighting is better than hunting. At least the animal has a chance at kicking someone's ass in bull fighting....when you're hunting the animal has no chance in doing any damage to you (unless you're a complete moron).

Its the principle though. People hunt to kill the animal. It is a challenge to get it, and soon after it realizes you are there it likely dies. The bulls have a crappy time...

Furthermore I bet a much much greater majority of hunted animals end up fleeing the hunter alive than the number of bulls who fight their way out of the ring and run free

I know a few people who hunt still to supplement the food bought in stores, its a little more healthier, and they usually get a bit more excerice doing that than driving to micky d's but i personally perfer to hunt on equal terms with the prey, no weapons, scents, guns, and camophlage.

thats why i've never gone hunting, I hunt computers, woman, and food in the kitchen. I've only lost to a bad lobster once, had a few ties in the other catagories.

I think it is stupid, but then again I think the way our country treats livestock is exceedingly cruel.

You know how much I have to pay for a dozen eggs produced by free ranging chickens?

$3.00

A dozen eggs laid by chickens who spend there lives packed like sardines?

.89

I can't do anything about the bulls in Spain, but I can use my $$$ to support the humane treatment of animals in my own country.

Amazing.

We have people who can't afford to put food on the table, people living in the streets, veterans even, and people are STILL overly concerned with how we treat chickens and cows.

What does that say about our priorities?

(Isla, I'm not attacking you, just making some observations)

It's ok, fdiskboy.

I buy this way because I can afford to. I don't look down on people who can't... I volunteer my time to help others because I can afford to, and I don't look down on those who can't, either. You do what you can, when you can, if your conscience moves you.

Change happens slowly. To think that it could happen overnight or even in the space of a presidental term is silly. Chnage also happens with the individual actions of others. If you really believe in something, work to change it. Just don't complain while sitting on your butt, please~!

I think we need to make some agricultural changes.... before bacteria becomes completely resistant to anti-biotics, before things like Mad Cow disease start to kick us in the butt.

My point was, how the WORLD treats animals is a bit troublesome and potentially a health hazard for us. Spain and the bulls is just one small part of a bigger picture. Why point a finger at bullfighting and not examine other 'abuses'? Seems hypocritical to me.

Just my .02

edit: PS, if you think I'm a PETA member, you are mistaken. I have gleefully witnessed the euthanasia of mean animals as a veterinary technician, and I have a very balanced approach to what place animals have in this world, so don't think you can bait me.
