Isn't "summer" Q3?

Summer starts in mid june if you go by the calendar. Summer starts with memorial day in the US if you ask the man on the street.

It's going to be a really rough 6 months for AMD, I think...

Brazos APU launched and looking good. Bulldozer launches. Graphics looking very good. Huge number of notebook design wins. I think you might be pretty lonely on that opinion.

A lot of people are concerned about AMD when it comes to CPUs. You guys are struggling to compete on the low-end, and essentially have no competitive products in either the midrange or the high-end market.

With Bulldozer being at least 5 months away, that's bad IMO. I'm sure a ton of people are going to invest in Sandy Bridge before then.

Unless AMD has a surprise launch on their hands, my thoughts are that they need to get a better handle on their product launches.

Amd is looking better now than any time since Conroe launched. Graphics is doing well, intel has killed off low/mid range overclocking, and in ~6 months amd will be at least competitive in the CPU range that intel has fumbled. Its almost like intel said "give us the oem and high end, you guys take the mid/low market and budget overclockers, oh, and take the integrated gaming market while you're at it". Add in bobcat, mobile graphics, chipsets, etc etc and amd should end up with a good year as long as they come reasonably close to their launch schedules.

I've got to agree with others, until Bulldozer/Llano launch, AMD is in trouble with the desktop market. Sure Athlon II is still a great budget offering, but Phenom II X4/X6 just doesn't have the price/performance of Sandy Bridge or the ability to even compete if overclocking is considered.

The new Bobcat based platforms look good for their market segment, and the discrete graphics cards are doing great in my opinion, but raw processing power for the desktop just isn't there.

Yeah I think its looking bad! last I heard IB is 22nm and was going to launching around august or so. Bulldozer will be 32 nm unless they plan to drop it to 28nm by july then amd will have a good chance in my opinion.

I think price point will be a big issue to since intel chips are packing some power and are not to badly priced.But what will amd price at?

Im really just dying to know what the hold up is about,is a 32nm problem or maybe amd is taking there time to squeeze as much performance per watt as they can into it for the long haul.

I would really like to see somthing as fast as a athon II X3 and hd5670 and pull as much power as the i3.

I havnt decided on a new chip yet still for llano and the i3 to come out.

when is llano releasing for pc or will it only be for mobile?

btw is the apu going to be 32nm cpu with 40nm gpu or will the gpu be 32 nm aswell?

As a current AMD stockholder, I wish that was the case...

I think there are a few things I am concerned about, and honestly I do not think I am alone. AMD's graphics division is certainly strong, and Brazos is looking good, but AMD really doesn't have much to compete in the other markets it serves. You could argue that mainstream desktop CPUs and server CPUs are no longer important aspects of AMD's business, but I don't think either of us would agree with that.

On the client side, AMD is simply outclassed. When I purchased my 1055T last summer, the 1055T was easily beating out higher-priced i7's for the workloads I was performing. If I was buying this summer, a 2500K would've been the right choice. What is AMD going to do when Intel releases the Sandy Bridge i3s? I'm hoping Llano can breathe some life into AMD's lineup, particularly for OEMs, but if it ends up being clocked at something ridiculous like 3ghz, it is again going to be knocked around by Intel dual-cores. Sure, Llano's IGP will be in a class of its own, but unless we get some OpenCL killer apps, it isn't going to matter for most of the people in its target market. Bulldozer will be out in Q2, but that is still a ways off.

On the server side, Bulldozer looks like it is going to be a winner (Assuming IPC hasn't fallen and clock speed has increased, this should be the case) -- but its going to be out in Q3! Until that point of time you're relying on Magny-Cours. I wouldn't call Magny-Cours a bad product, but the margins on that thing can't be pretty.

AMD's product pipeline looks good, but unfortunately at this moment the current product line just isn't that inspiring. Also disturbing is the absolute lack of a killer app for the APU. Hell, even Intel had QuickSync working out of the gate. Given Bobcat's 80 stream processors and dedicated decoders, I find it hard to believe something similar can't be implemented. Beating out an i7-920 in video-transcoding on a sub $500 dollar netbook would have been something really exciting. AMD has bragged Bobcat has 90GFLOPs of potential processing power, why isn't it put to good use?

I will take that bet.

There is no way they will launch IB in August, their OEMs would never have taken SB if it was a 7 month product. I think you are confusing your information.

GPUs are a bit overrated for non-graphics use unless you are talking about the 300mm2+ graphics at least.

Tomshardware has an article about Bobcat and media acceleration: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/asrock-e350m1-amd-brazos-zacate-apu,2840-4.html

AMD does have encode acceleration available on its discrete graphics products. But the two SIMD engines on Zacate simply aren’t powerful enough to demonstrate an appreciable benefit

Process technology takes time and money. You see anyone else out with 32nm yet besides Intel?

Know what Intel spends on R&D alone? Around $5.5B per year...GloFo and AMD spend around $2B per year. That $3B difference makes a difference.

As a current AMD stockholder, I wish that was the case...

...snip...

Your post came across as "ten reasons why I should not be an AMD investor". If you really believe half the stuff you wrote then you have a rather non-traditional investment strategy.

Most account managers tend to avoid investing in companies that have so little going for it.

If anything your post sounds like an argument for being an Intel shareholder...

(not that I agree or disagree with anything you posted, I just don't get why anyone would be a shareholder if they truly viewed the company and their products to be as you espouse...does not compute)

Llano sounds very promising. Killer app? Smoothly playing Sims, MMORPGs, random other games with no glitches.

I need an upgrade, but will wait for Bulldozer before making a decision. Llano looks good too for a secondary laptop.

The 22nm processors will first come at the higher end; think Server CPUs and Extreme Edition type chips. These are the chips which command a premium and allows Intel to mature the process and improve yield.

The main-stream will continue to be served by the 32nm process. The huge investment there has to be amortized.

Intel's market segmentation and pricing is determined by multiple variables:
=> Competition
=> Capital Amortization
=> Yields

The competition is a binary thing. If it is there then it determines a lot of Intel's actions. The strategic compulsions of a strong competitor take over and pricing and production follows that.

If there is no competition then Intel shifts focus on tactical execution issues. They will not wear out their latest gen fabs if the previous gen fabs are producing enough chips which sell at the right price point. They will also not move main-stream processors to the latest gen process till the process has been fine-tuned and the yields optimized to their best levels.

Intel has no reason to launch IB. They can sit on their hands if all AMD has to offer is a 8-core processor that OEMs and Bestbuy wont even touch.

Where did you hear that OEMs and BB aren't interested? Eng. samples just came out last month.

Just a guess, but I think that jfamd probably has more insider info on cpus in general and server cpus in particular than you do.
