AMD is a business, not a charity. Their shareholders would be rightly infuriated if they didn't maximize profit, which when capacity constrained requires getting as much per product shipped as possible.
Funny you should say that... I own 100 shares of Amd stock. And I want Amd to succeed as much as the next guy.

Or AMD is expecting to sell every processor the foundry gives them despite having a slight performance deficiency. Lets check our bases:

1: AMD could perform better than SB
2: AMD could perform the same as SB
3: AMD could perform worse than SB

This is the most accurate post in all of the bulldozer threads across every website ever.

Just take a look at these benchmarks. If you went through these benches you will have noticed that the "lowly" $225 2500k @ 4.7ghz basically smoked the 990X (6 core 12 threaded) 1st generation Core i system, which was also overclocked to 4.66ghz. While at it, the 2500k @ 4.7ghz consumed 142 W less at load than did an X6 1100T @ 4.0ghz.

Unless Bulldozer is 40-50% faster than Phenom II per clock, it has little chance of beating SB in benchmarks the average user cares about (unless its Turbo mode is out of this world). So we can most likely rule out your point #1, unless the benchmarks are wPrime, Cinebench and video transcoding where the more cores you have, the better. In that case, I can definitely see BD being very successful.

AMD is 2 full generations behind in performance since Phenom II is only as fast as Core 2 Quad generation[/URL]. So how is AMD going to go from Phenom II all the way to Sandy Bridge in performance / clock and energy efficiency all in 1 generation when it took Intel, the firm with the most advanced manufacturing facilities in the world, 2 full generations?

I am betting this time the consumer will have to choose between a system well suited for multi-threaded tasks (AMD's 8 core system) and a system well suited for everything else (SB system). Not to mention Intel hasn't even launched SB-E series socket LGA2011.

Perhaps another refresher of just how slow Phenom II is in the cards: Core i7 920 @ 3.5ghz is 45% faster than Phenom II X4 @ 3.5ghz in Arma2. SB adds another 15% on top of that.

This means we can most likely rule out your point #2 as well.

I was on our forums before Phenom I/II launched and I still remember how much hype that processor carried. So for this launch, I am preparing myself to be disappointed so I don't become disappointed....again!!

Then Amd is positioning the FX8k's to take on SB-E. Where as the FX6k's will take on the LGA1155 i7's.

^^^ AMD can "position" their processors all they want. But performance and their positioning may not have anything to do with reality. Sure AMD currently sells their Phenom II X4 955 for $119, directly against the Core i3-2100 at $115. However, the i3-2100 handily beats it in just about everything the average user cares about. And you probably already know that the $184 Core i5-2400 offers substantially higher overall performance than the X6 1100T—for the same money, and with a lower 95W power envelope.

So we can't just assume that because AMD is pricing their processors similar to Sandy Bridge's prices that their architecture is suddenly "competitive".

Everything revolves around the $220 2500K. The question is how much slower the new AMD $180 4 core and how much faster the $240 6 core BDs are because I seriously doubt it will touch SB single threaded peformance.

P.S AMD please improve your stock HSFs. They make my hairdryer sound quiet.

AMD names their chip architecture after race tracks?

They sure do, and have for some time now. Strictly speaking, they name their cores after towns with race tracks (every architecture well, ever, from both Intel and AMD has been named after a town... somewhere). Remember Magny-Cours? ...yeah. It may sound like "many-core", and it sure had a crapload of cores, but it is a race track.

They have for a while now. They sponsor Ferrari's F1 effort.

That makes sense. And I've actually been boycotting AMD for years because of their connection to Ferrari (same goes for Shell, Puma, etc). It's funny how advertising can work against a company sometimes.

What's wrong with Ferrari? Ignoring the fact that your user name might display your team preference.

something tells me power consumption wont be equal still. even if AMD wins in performance against SB, i'm pretty sure the idle power of my i5-2400 is amazing and the right choice for a NAS

It's clearly a server cpu - lots of cores, lower IPC. Not surprising as that's where the money is - they can charge twice the price for what is basically the same chip. I agree that those who think these will be killer desktop chips are more hopeful then realistic.

Llano is the desktop chip and we already know the cpu performance of that.

Llano is the mainstream DT CPU. Highend belongs to FX-Series according to AMD.

According to AMD engineers IPC of BD won't be lower than of family 10h (which also means, that it won't be as high as SB's) - on average. And if the Asus slide is no fake, then 8 cores at 3.8 GHz (more with Turbo) should be fast. How would a Phenom II X8 at 3.8 GHz base clock and with Turbo Core 2.0 perform?

unless your NAS has like 50 drives doing some sort of encrypted raid magic, doesn't that seem like an absurd waste of a cpu when we are talking about power consumption?

Wow, I didn't realize how long I had lurked on this forum before I joined. Probably around 20065ish.

I remember two major major letdowns for me in regards to new products. The lesser one was the Nvidia 9xxx series launch. Basically a 8xxx with a new name. This marked the point to me of when GPU launches lost their magic. I doubt we will ever see such an insane time period as we did going from FX->6800->7800->8800.

The biggest letdown however, to me at least, was the Phenom launch. AMD was giving Intel the spanks back before Conroe so I think many of us were expecting the much talked about Phenom to be this beast of a processor. Myself especially. I became involved with this hardware stuff around the time that Athlon was king. Back then the best computers had an Athlon inside. Only bad prebuilt computers had Intel in them as far as I was concerned.

So with all the Phenom hype, I was so excited for AMD to Conroe the market back to what they used to be. I was so let down when I read the Anandtech article. It felt the same as finding your father by accident in a Santa suit on Christmas day when you are 6 years old. Sure the next Christmas is fun and exciting, but never again will it be mindblowingly awesome as it was right before you found out there was no Santa.

Since then I have as well been preparing myself to be disappointed on most hardware launches. I really wanted Bulldozer to just blow SB out of the water. We all did.

I'm wondering if the 8 core has a 3.8GHz base clock then would it mean that the 4 core version should have a base that is >4GHz? It would be great if the Asus slide is legit. :hmm:

What? Santa is actually my dad? D: Christmas is still fun despite the fact that I now know that the North Pole is cold, desolate and not filled with midgets in coned hats making presents for kids.

Would be nice to see Bulldozer have a performance advantage over SB for this short period of time. 6 months or so later Ivy will reclaim the throne and the vicious cycle continues.

If the throne is determined by the fastest cpu ivy won't change a thing within 6months... Maybe over 12months... when they lift ivy bridge to the high end.

Yeah. I'm not so sure why everyone's talking about Ivy -- it's just a die-shrunk, more-graphics-core version of Sandy. SNB-E is what enthusiasts should be talking about.

At any rate, even if AMD does not retake the raw performance throne (and this is likely), as long as they can make competitive products at the common price points (i.e. $99 - $350) then they will do very well. Having a $1,000 extreme edition CPU is nice, but that's not where the money is on desktop.

Honestly, if I build budget PCs for people who aren't hardcore gamers, I'm going to go with the Llano A8 stuff. Die shrunken Athlon II with >= Xbox 360 graphics built in? Count me in.

And if I'm looking to build a higher end desktop that's relatively future proof and can feed its graphics cards, more likely than not I'll go with Bulldozer. AMD will do fine, but I don't think they will have that $1,000 EE chip to dethrone Intel's stuff -- but they don't need to!

Who knows AMD might want to price it similar to Intel offerings but may have a huge performance advantage at the same price point.

AMD is not in any position to start a price war.

But, why would AMD price cheaper that Intel? What benefit does that get them? When have they done so in the past? Is ATI doing it now?

There's a saying in business - He who lives by price dies by price.

Also, starting a price war with Intel is a BAD idea -- they can slim their margins down and survive. AMD needs all the $ it can get!

As much as it will suck for AMD to start a price war, that's sort of what we enthusiasts want, correct? Lower prices are better for us. We just need to hope AMD can innovate/improve more and more to ensure they don't get killed off
