I would argue that the 4 games you listed offer a much more challening experience than modern shooters however, so while they don't require vast battle knowledge and strategy, you need extremely quick reflexes and core shooter skills. Most of the new shooters just require you to take cover for a few seconds any time you get in over your head.
Regenerative health/cover systems redefined the modern shooter, for better and for worse. A return to old school Dm/Quake/SS/DNF, at least the option to play such titles, is sorely needed. Fpss don't all have to be uber realistic and gritty.
