It's amazing how often you hear this crap being spouted out about the NFL. He was a coward for reporting this? They basically think this behavior is okay, and that he has somehow hurt the NFL brand by allowing this to come to light at all. That's why he should have manned up!

I really wish that SI, ESPN, and broadcast would stop using ex players and coaches for all of their game insight. Maybe it's all the brain damage they got from multiple concussions, but they have very little of value to contribute.

Oh, and this: http://deadspin.com/shirtless-richie-incognito-drops-an-n-bomb-and-acts-lik-1458436867

Not to make light of the situation...but I lol'd at this in the comments section...

Why would racial epithets be the dividing line? Racial epithets are horrible, sure, but they're also legal. How many players have been convicted or pleaded guilty to crimes and been allowed to keep playing? Shit, Riley Cooper was caught publicly using the n-word this summer and he's played in every game so far. Racial slurs mean exactly nothing in the NFL; a slap on the wrist, a reproachful look and everyone continues on like nothing happened.

Racial slurs are NOT legal in the workplace.

I don't understand why he just didn't engage him in physical combat, or at least call his bluff. Fear of losing his job, an organized crime angle, why was he scared enough to bail on the team? I don't get it.

I want to know more about the logistics of sticking him with a $1500 bill too, how'd that go down. So weird, I just can't wrap my mind around this story.

others have denied the dinner bill thing but it is fairly common in the NFL.

But what happens if you don't pay- ALL the vets team up against you in a FIGHT?

I don't think so. I want to know exactly how it goes down, they just keep ordering bottle after bottle, then stick it to the rookies, but what if they just say "no, separate checks b/c I didn't drink any of that lol", what's going to happen, or more importantly what do they THINK will happen. And does it all go down at the establishment, in the locker room? An nfl player, I just can't imagine them getting bullied. But there are probably giants who are mental midgets. Just can't understand it.

Ridiculous. Hazing has absolutely no part in modern society, no redeemable benefit. And this wasn't even hazing, it was flat out bullying. I can't believe these teams pay these guys the money they do and still let this go on.

A guy I knew from high school is a rookie WR for the Dolphins right now. Too bad I don't talk to him anymore.

I do not see why this is even a problem. The dude was making 100k a week. For that much you can repeatedly kick me in the balls and I would be happy about it.

Yes, and I do not see what the big deal is. He is rich and paid very well to deal with this.

Professional sports are a joke. They don't care about these guys any more than a company cares about it's assets. They are all replaceable, sans a very small group of "elite" stars.

It's hypocritical of the NFL, analysts, sportscasters, etc. to go crowing about this as if this was something terrible. Apparently, in the NFL, you *CAN* beat the fuck out of your wife/girlfriend, drive drunk, assault people, disregard handgun laws, and just have a general disregard for abiding by societal standards but you *CANNOT* verbally assault someone without the full hammer of "justice" coming down on you hard.

I'm not defending that mouth-breather Icognito by any means. I mean, we're not dealing with Rhodes scholars here. For every intelligent, productive member of society in the NFL you have multiple guys who basically signed their contracts by making a big "X" with a Crayola crayon. They've been told all their lives they are "special" and above retribution. They've had their actions and behaviors cleaned and scrubbed before society got a whiff of what was going on.

Sports business and society simply cannot have it both ways...you can't create monsters in the back room then feign shock when they are released and cause chaos.

A miami sports talking head just put it in context I don't agree with, but can understand a possible angle to the decision. Maybe: His three choices were to either go to the coaches, then forever be the guy that snitched; or fight back and be the guy the media reports is fighting not just teammate but fellow lineman (supposed to be cohesive unit) & "leadership" appointee no less lol; or else just take it. Quitting might have seemed like his best option.

Still, it's too hard to believe a giant who played football all his life would back down from this. Maybe incognito was too much of a wild card, watching some of the videos, considering his family was involved, or mentioned.

Hope martin gets back & finds great success in the league somewhere (else).

Does Baltimore have any spots open? I would love to see him go there.

I think you are right that his choices were limited. Keep in mind that if Icognito was a leader, Martin probably felt it was him against the rest of the team. Even if he is a big boy, he can't fight all of them. You can't really run to the coach and tell on them. It sounds like he dealt with it until he broke. Martin handled this well. He hasn't been going around blasting the team or even Incognito. He went through the proper channels because he felt like the team was against him.

I hope this guy comes back. But I also hope he eventually talks about it, especially with kids. Lets get a big ass NFL player to tell kids they don't have to put up with abuse. I like that idea.

Others have fought icognito and got suspended 1-2 games. IF he went to snitch i think it have been far worse. seems Icognito ran the the clubhouse.

Just because he is big means jack shit. Personality is what matters. I doubt he had many people trying to bully him. He may not be used to it or how to handle it. so he bottled it up until he had enough.

I do wish martin luck. Nobody should get that kind of shit. Also as adults and in teh work place? insane.

I heard that Martin was pretty much isolated from the rest of his teammates. No one would talk to him and if he sat down to eat with players, they get up and move to another table.

My confusion doesn't come so much from the fact that he's a huge guy getting bullied, but a huge guy with the mentality & toughness to play in the NFL... well maybe not after all. We'll see, I hope so.

Maybe their personalities & culture has changed over the years more than I realized.
