Mods, I have no idea how this became a sticky topic. Please fix

Edit: now its not sticky.
It's a forum feature. As soon as one posts a new thread, it shows up there with the stickies but only for the original poster. Then on next screen refresh it drops down to normal.

That is good. Glad we have something we can give props to the orange man for.

I mean the main gist is that automatic weapons have always been banned for any average US Citizen from getting a-hold of. This device basically turned semi-automatics into a make-shift automatic thereby circumventing the ban. I agree it should be outlawed in full.

EDIT: What annoys the shit out of me though is why crap like this takes so long - and only as a reactionary step instead of a proactive one.

Thats sort of what I was talking about. Issue appeared under Obama, the ATF wanted direction if they should go with these. Obama floated the idea of a ban and got the typical "your gunna take our GUNS!" then dropped the discussion.
President Trump being a Republican can do such an order with minimal push back. Good for Trump getting this done.

Be honest though: WHAT prevented Obama from banning it?

From the looks of it - this didn't take a bill to be passed or anything. From my understanding, it is simply stating that under the 1986 law this creates an automatic weapon and is therefore illegal... Basically a clarification or ruling that this devices falls within the 1986 ban.

At Trump's direction, the Justice Department in March 2018 proposed a rule clarifying that bump stocks were not merely parts, but instead were "machine guns" -- what the federal government calls fully automatic weapons -- as defined by existing law.
Why? Because "such devices allow a shooter of a semiautomatic firearm to initiate a continuous firing cycle with a single pull of the trigger," similar to automatic rifles, the Justice Department said.
Defining bump stocks as machine guns effectively bans them. Civilian possession of fully automatic weapons was outlawed in 1986 except for those already lawfully in people's ownership.

Also he is getting pushback - they are attempting to sue the justice department.

Damn the NRA/ammo manf's must be so pissed now that folks won't be able to shred shit with their pop guns anymore. So much more ammo could have been wasted and profits gained if the ban weren't enacted.

I'm from the school where every bullet counts dearly because I pay for each and every one so my condolences go out to those folks who like to spray theirs a few hunnert rounds at a time.

Must be nice to blow a wad of cash for few seconds worth of making a pile of spent brass and not feel the pinch.

Jealous? Nope. For many years I had the federal gov't supply me with all kinds of nice bang bang sticks to play with and they actually paid me for burning off ammo whose shelf life was about to expire or was excess procurement for that particular training cycle.

Got the urge to splurge extinguished right out of me from doing it one too many times I guess.

Our country is broken. Bribery of the Congress by lobbyists like the NRA is completely legal.

Exactly why I'm hoping I can save up enough to retire somewhere reasonable like New Zealand.

My understanding is that in 2010 the ATF determined they did not have the legal ability to prohibit them, the WH did not override that determination. Now it's going to get fought out in court.

This is an act of Congress, not an ATF ruling. I doubt the ammosexuals will come out on top. Bump stocks were always a cheat on regulation of full auto firearms.

DOJ issued a new rule that the stocks count creating a new automatic weapons under the 1986 law, reversing the ATF's original position. This interpretation can, and will, be debated in court.

Here’s a video I found awhile back. The guy goes out and buys an AR and a bump stock to compare fire rates.

He’s fast in semi-auto mode but becomes surprised at just how much faster a bump stock is.

Just another excuse by Obama for inaction. If it wasn't related to creating instability through race baiting, Obama had no stomach to do anything difficult.

The NRA is way down on the list of slinging money around. Don't forget your hijab for retirement.

You are correct. I merely skimmed the article & got the wrong impression.
