I didn't say it couldn't be controlled now did I?
I've gone through many thousands of rounds with a Thompson...
Thanks for triggering a sentimental moment for me. Our Armory had two of those pretty little things (one with pistol grip and drum mag even) that never got turned in and I somehow was allowed to have some fun with them given I was helping out with maintaining the sidearm 45's, 16's, 60's and leftover scoped 14's we still had laying around. We also had a modest stockpile of 45 rounds for the 1911's that were about to get shitcanned and we were up for quals anyway, so why not take advantage of playing Elliot Ness and Capone for a day? So after a brief familiarization and takedown drill with the smithie we were off and convoyed to the range for 16's and sidearm quals and some real fun with those sweet Chatty Cathy sweepers. Drew an appreciative crowd after a few firings and cool downs because of the unique sound they made and how the brass would sail off into a nice arc.
Man-o-man you really had to clamp down a firm grip on to those buggers yeah? Most fun I had that day was loading mags (clips back then) for 45 quals while watching the officers struggle with loading and aiming and some of those meatheads were actually afraid to fire their pistols, especially the ones that forgot to unlock the safety and kept puling away until the range boss calmed them down a bit. Fucking clowns playing with deadly weapons made life really tense for the range officers.
