so what smartfan numbers did you guys end up using after the flash? Above someone said "set to auto". For me I have disabled and then a couple of range values for start temp and pwm value. All I know right now is this thing is being fucking loud....
Just installed an E4500 that I acquired from Newegg.com. Had to use the Compaq HSF as the Intel-provided one uses different fasteners. This CPU does not work with current (May 2007) Compaq BIOS - It gives an error indicating invalid CPU.
Flashed with the latest ECS 945GCT-M (V1.0) BIOS dated 7/24/2007 - It has been upgraded to recognize the E4500.
Note: You must have the Celeron or other Compaq-recognized CPU installed in order to perform the flash. You cannot get past the E4500 Compaq/AMI error message screen to flash the BIOS.
I also swapped out the power supply with a Cooler Master eXtreme Power 500w which I picked up a few weeks ago at CompUSA for $19.99 AR. Other changes I made were: two 1GB sticks of HP RAM that I got for $32 AR, a ChainTech 6600GT that someone gave me, and a 3 1/2" floppy drive that I salvaged from an old Pentium II PC.
This E4500 run is with the BIOS set to 242 yielding 2.662 Ghz. This INTEL tool seems to be a better approach than observing speedfan data as it allows you to nail both CPUs at 100% and capture the results in a log. The system would boot at up to 254 / 2.8 Ghz, but at that speed the temperature would not stabilize with the Compaq/Antec cooler.
