Burn in on 2005fpw?

I have a 2005fpw thats probaly under a year old, and I usually always have a pip window in my top right hand corner. I turned it off today to check the time on my mac, and I noticed theres a faint outline of where the window was. I thought that burn in was impossible on an lcd?

It is.

It will go away, leave it off for an extended period of time.

Burn in is possible on LCD's but it requires EXTENDED periods of having the same image up all the time. I'm talking at least a week and more likely close to two weeks with the same static image in place. Turn on the Windows built in screensaver so that it puts your monitor to sleep after a certain period of time (15min is good) would more than be enough to counter this problem. Sleep mode also saves $ in electricity bills even though the monitor is still drawing power, it's not as bad as if it was on all the time.

do you have a link verifying this? im just curious becuase ive never read that it is possible at all before..

the way i understood it, you can have the same image up for 2 weeks.. it just will take longer to go away the longer its up.

or if you have the same image up for 4 months, it will just take a very long time to fade away. i thought permanent/forever burn-in on liquid crystals was impossible..

im sure if the same image is left up for an insane amount of time, therefore takes an equally insane amount of time to go away, they are going to assume its there forever. but im not sure if thats the reality of how LCDs work.

Burn-in is definitely a problem on LCDs. My dad told me the crystals had to keep changing polarity not to get burned out, something like that.

Burn in isn't usually a permanent effect on LCDs - although you can get a temporary image persistance, if a static image has been displayed for a long time. It's relatively easily avoided by using a screensaver that makes the screen to go black(or into standby) with a short timeout.

This is in contrast to CRT or plasma displays, where the screen does actually burn - the effect is permanent. The only options for these technologies is not to display a static image - there is no recovery if you switch off or display a black screen - or to artificially burn the rest of the screen to match (whole screen bright white, or display a 'negative' image of the burn).

Older LCD displays could burn in if the control electronics didn't provide perfect AC power (with absolutely no hint of DC. Even the tiniest DC component and the crystals would tend to stick in one direction). Modern electronics can do this extremely precisely and use sophisticated self adjusting circuits.

Same thing happened to me with my 2005FPW. I have a thread here somewhere.

I was just as surprised as you. I started turning my monitor off when I wasn't going to be using it and the apparent burn-in went away. Also, this burn-in was only noticeable with very light backgrounds.

I had the same thing on my 2005FPW when I left the same wallpaper up for a month without a screen saver. It was faint, but it was easily seen.

Now, I change the wallpaper more regularly and use a 15min screensaver, and I turn the monitor off when I go to work.

It's called Image Persistence. I see the black horizontal lines from firefox after a weekend of usage (not that noticeable - you have to look for it), but it goes away after a few days when I don't use it as much.

Yup, my 2005 FPW was doing it thanks to the ATOT webpage being up all the time I remedied it with a white screen up for about a day. I use the power off after 20 minutes now
