Burn on my leg from motorcycle?

Long story short I burnt my calf on a motorcycle. I'm sure it's a second degree. Its leaking a bit since the skin tore in the crash. I would say it's about the size of a raquet ball. I have it wrapped up now with Slivadene on it, and will let it breathe at night.

I'm going on vacation in a week..for a week. Will I be able to swim when I'm there or is that a bad idea?

Sure, you can swim. You might want to keep sun off of it, but you'll be fine.

It all depends on how much has healed by the time you plan to swim. An open burn can easily become infected by bacteria, especially if swimming. That burn needs to be healed over or covered with a scab before going swimming.

I wouldn't. I had the exact same thing happen to me but not as the result of a crash, I touched my bare leg on the hot exhaust pipe, and I went swimming a few days later and it got infected. I went to the doctor and he put me right on antibiotics, said if I had waited another day I probably would have had to be hospitalized for it.

The antibiotics were really strong too. First couple days I was actually throwing up from them they made me so nauseous.

Agreed. It needs to be treated as an open wound, but don't cover it. So there's really no protection and you need to be careful of infection. Keep it clean, no swimming.

Did this when I was a kid in Taiwan. We were out in the middle of nowhere when it happened. Skin bubbled up (little bubbles) and the skin was cooked brown pretty immediately. There was a noticeable oval-shaped scar on my calf for maybe 10 years.

Can't really see the scar anymore unless I look for it.

I crashed a motorcycle when I was 15 and woke up after being dazed and knocked out for a few moments to the bikes exhaust pipe laying on my leg and I was wearing shorts at the time.

Needless to say it hurt like a mofo and skin was falling off in sheets afterwards as I walked my wrecked bike back to my home about 5 miles away.

I got it all cleaned out as well as I could and got all the bits of gravel and dirt out of the wound then took a leaf from a aloe plant we had and cut it down the middle and laid the goupy side right on my wound.

It was such sweet relief.

I did that every single morning right after waking up and in about 2 weeks it was pretty well healed closed.

I truly believe that because of doing that every day for 2 weeks that it is the only reason I have on discernible scare on that leg.

I think anybody who's ever rode dirt bikes eventually gets a tatoo from the head or muffler. I had "HONDA" tattooed on me for a few weeks from the head. Wore protective gear from there on out.

MY friends bike died in front if me and I had to slam on the brakes not to smoke him. Gravel plus hard brakes almost never turns out well.
