I was going to purchase a new cdrw drive - 12x or higher most likely. If I purchase a drive with a 4mb buffer, do I really need burn-proof? Also, any recommendations for a good inexpensive, not cheap, brand with burn-proof are greatly appreciated.

Just get a new Yamaha 16x, you couldn't make any coasters if you WANTED to. The one I've been using sits on an old P2 with a 5400 RPM ATA33 hard drive, so the ram buffer will completely drain, AND IT STILL FINISHES THE BURN! Now that's a bitchin' drive!

I feel that it is needed. I can't imagine going back to not having it. I can surf and do other things while burning and not have to worry about. No it's not needed but it's great to have. Plus, these days it doesn't cost much more. I see on the hot deals forums 12x10x32's with burnproof for $150. Can't beat that.

Burn-proof is nice to have, but not necessary at all cost. Remember though, that at 16X, it takes like 1.7 seconds to empty the buffer...

I have it on my plex and the security it brings is worth it IMO

yep, as many mentioned above, Burn Proof is not necessary, but is a very nice feature to have!

I couldn't care less for burn-proof. I don't remember when was the last time I had a bad burn. Computers are very fast and modern burners and media are very reliable.

actually really depend on yourself. For example, i am still using 4x burner from teac. ofcourse if you have the money go for the better one. If not, i am just using it for backup.. is not nessessary for me to purchanse a 350 cdn burner to burden myself i rather spend the money on a better system. but is good to have a burner with burn proof in 12x

No, its not needed. Its very nice, and will save you a coaster here and there, but its not "worth" it. It was added in as hype to sell the product for more profit. Just keep you hd and burner on different channels, and for christs sake, get away from your computer for a whole impossibly long, jesus I'm a dork and cant leave my pc for 5 minutes while it burns. Besides, I know my pasty white skin could use some exposure to that big bright light in the sky......

Check the hot deals section for the Teac 12x10x32 model 512EB with "burnproof" for about $155. with Nero software. It benches about the same as the Plextor. For that price it's cheap insurance. Oh yea, I have it and it's a nice burner...fast and with the firmware upgrade it works with CloneCD.

Teac 12x10x32 w/Burn-Proof

You can buy it with Nero for $156.99 w/free shipping or without Nero for $146.99 w/free shipping.

I just purchased the drive and they upgraded my UPS Ground shipping to UPS 3 Day Select

I don't have any Burn-Proof CD-RW drives. But from what I've been told, you can...

Burn a CDR,
Edit digital video,
Scan your mother-in-law's vacation photos,
Listen to your favorite Tony Orlando CD,
E-mail your girlfriend/boyfriend/boyfriend/girlfriend,
Run a Hard drive benchmarking app.

ALL AT THE SAME TIME... WITHOUT MAKING A COASTER!

Now that's better than "sliced bread"!

According to your System Info, you are running a SCSI burner. That's a whole different ball game. (And boy do you need some rounded cables! )

FWIW, the Ricoh 12x/10x/32x + 8x DVD combo drive is at MWave for $199. I paid $260 for this one about 1.5 months ago from Buy.com.

<< . . . really needed?>>

No.

Useful or desireable? Yes.

I am a real cheapskate. When I upgraded my old 2x Acer burner, I went for the 10X HP rewriter because it was a "Hot Deal" ($25 after MIR). I can leave my computer for the 7 minutes or so it now takes to burn a CD. And I haven't made a coaster yet.

It's not needed but it's nice. If your not stressing your computer hard than you likely won't find any real benefit to it. If your just surfing the net or something while burning it won't helo at all really. But if your into some intensive gaming while buring at the same time that's when Burn-Proof really makes a difference.
