Isn't there a chemical you can drink that basically instantly neutralizes the heat of the pepper?

I've been tempted to get some to try out mixing with things, eating one straight up sounds like tempting a lot of time in the hurtlocker.

I wonder... I've been told capsaicin is a non-polar molecule, which means it's like oil and it doesn't dissolve in water. This explains why milk is a better liquid to drink than water if you want to reduce the heat. But because capsaicin is non-polar, i.e. like oil, maybe drinking a diluted solution of dish washing detergent helps? :hmm:

capsaicin antagonists exist, i'm almost positive. Take that and it's gone.

The poor bastard on display appears to have not had such a chemical handy at the time of eating his little red, grown in Satan's anus, death peppers.

Hm, that works too. I guess the question becomes how much of it would one person have to take in order to block out enough capsaicin receptors long enough for the stuff to go through your system...

Only one way to find out. Do it for science. Do it for ATOT.

This.

I've never seen any point or merit in putting yourself on show as a public laughing stock.
The whole "extreme food" thing is utterly ridiculous anyway.

I agree with the idea of the pain being less than a culinary treat, however many peppers have a distinct flavor. Habaneros/scotch bonnets would be an example. I am considering ordering some plants, not to reproduce stupid, but to see if I can raise them in my climate and overwinter them in containers. If I get fruit I'll use a little (probably very little) to see if they have a unique taste.

Once I tried some chilies from Hatch New Mexico.
I would have been better off just eating fire.

Hatch chilies are fairly mild. I wouldn't use them straight up but instead roast them over a grill or under a broiler until the skin is blackened. Put them in a zip lock bag (haven't had one melt yet) them seal them. After cooled the skins should slip off, then remove the stem and seeds and freeze them in small portions to use during the year. Roasting them seems to mellow them while adding a sweetness and complexity of flavor that raw chilies don't have.

Oh don't get me wrong I love spicy food (I've got a pot of chilli bubbling away right now) but this whole "let's eat something that I obviously don't enjoy and film it" thing is what I'm criticising.

That along with eating stupid amount of food.

There's something obscene about turning food into that sort of "entertainment".

I hope vomit videos go the way of the poop stuff that was popular at one time here.
