Mitsumi and my rebadged Teac (it's a Yamaha). Those were both solid burners. The Mitsumi isn't name brand but it went through more than 400+ burns and it's still going.

I can't say what's best because my Plextor 12/10/32 is my first burner. But I will say that Plextor has awesome support so far. For whatever reason the firmware update I downloaded wouldn't take, so I sent an email to their support guys. The next day I received a very polite response saying that there were some known problems, and was provided with a list of corrective actions to take, a couple of helpful links, and a file attachment in case the fix at the linked website didn't work. Can't beat that.

Plextor seems to be quite popular, their burn proof technology is great. Bout time IMO.

Personally use an HP 8X4X32. No complaints, it has never made a coaster and is fast.

I love Plextors but the new Philips drives are starting to look apealing since they are the only drives not affected by the new Safe Disc 2 copy protection at the moment.

Your phear my Plextor 12/10/32 SCSI

Yamaha is good also. Prior to the Plextor I used Yamaha's 4x and 8x SCSI which gave me no problems at all..

I did inquire about the Yamaha 16x Lightspeed from my distributor and he said out of 50 drives he sold, 23 came back to him defective??? That's a very high rate of RMA or he just got a bad batch...

I have the Sony CRX-140E, and if burning gets any better than this it would challenge sex!!!!

As a reseller/builder, I have sold loads of different burners, but the one in my machine is a Plexwriter 12/10/32 IDE!!! SCSI is nice but certainly not worth the extra in this case. I wouldnt swap mine for anything.......except perhaps for a Plextor 24/20/64 when/if it arrives

Plextor Ultra SCSI 12x10x32 - 4MB cache - $265
Plextor E-IDE 12x10x32 - 2MB cache - $200

I easily spend the extra $65.

I have Sanyo 12-4-32 SCSI (Smart & Friendly nameplate) and
Plextor 12-10-32 IDE (Iomega faceplate), and all things being
equal, would recommend the SCSI drive. It's a bit faster, on
average, than the IDE drive. It also requires essentially no
system resources. And since you're gonna need SCSI if you want
to use the best CDrom reader (Plextor 40X SCSI), that's not an
issue...

But if I was building a machine for a friend where price was an
issue and burning was a casual concern, no question: Plextor
12-10-32 IDE.

Mitsumi's have been good to me, I have a 2x that's still working dandily. I used it for my 'business' too (copying CD's for people in school =)). So it went through a lot, probably 750ish or so. I have a 4x Mitsumi in my newer system now and it's working dandily too. They're not ugly like the HP ones either.

Just a burner and nothing else? Plextor kicks ass.

However, if you're looking for an all in one Ricoh Combo MP9120A (12x/10x/32x/8x) got favorable reviews from Maximum PC.

BTW, hasn't it been proven through benchmark tests that Pentium + RDRAM doesn't significantly improve (i.e. it's not worth the price) performance over Athlon + SDRAM PC133 systems?

Another vote for TDK Velo 12x10x32x, better software by far, and burnproof to boot.

Well I have both the Plextor 12/10/32 IDE and the TDK 12/10/32 in my machine. They both rock, but then they are the same drive. I love this setup since I can backup my playstation games on the fly in about 7 minutes.

My friends mitsumi sucked, my other friends HP is good most of the time but sometimes randomly makes caoasters for no apparent reason, and my dad's HP is a big lump of crap with about a %50 coaster ratio.

I will stick with Plextors, the only coasters I have made so far were my fault.

Heh..

Am I the only one with a HP? Same features as pre-burnproof Plextor (save overburn) but cheaper; at leas in Canada.

Well I have had two HPs now and a lot of my friends have HP drives too. I think they are great drives. But then I have never used a Plextor so maybe I am yet to be converted
