I'm about to buy a new burner...
The Yamaha 16x10x40 looks pretty good. It has an 8meg buffer and pretty good software bundle...and I can get one for $215

But there are others, like the burn proof plextors, and the more less expensive wonderfully reliant names...

What do you guys think? I'd like to hear your input before I make my final decision.

There is no other name in burners, other than Plextor.

Plextor is the top of the line in my opinion. Nothing else compares...

Plextor....

First burner was a Ricoh 7040 flashed to the 7060, made more coasters than I knew what to do with...

Second burner was the Imation 8x20 (Rebadged Plextor 8x20 SCSI) and found out what burning was all about...

Third burner was the Iomega 12x10x32 (rebadged Plextor 12x10x32 IDE with Burn Proof) this is what burning on IDE is SUPPOSED to be like....

Plextor. IMHO, there is little difference between 8x and 12x unless you wanna save 2 minutes. I'm sure the difference between 12x and 16x is even less. better of saving money and going for a 12x10x32 IDE w/ Burn proof or a 8x4x32 SCSI setup. Plextor on the SCSI, or Plextor, TDK or Iomega on the IDE.

I have the TDK 12 10 32 and I love it. It's the exact same drive as the Plextor but with better software. Maximum PC gave the TDK a 10 and the Plextor a 9.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha! Why would someone ask a question like this on this BBS? Anyone that thought anything but Plextor wouldn't dare to post for fear of their lives. This question is damn near as one sided as what's better: SDRAM or RDRAM?

Personnally I think the plextors are overhyped and overpriced. They are excellent drives, and if you burn a hell of a lot you probably want one. But if you are a casual burner they cost to much in my view.
Plextor is certainly the best, but they are by far not my favourite.

However...the TDK and possibly the Iomega are fairly attractive, last time I check the 12/10/32 TDK was very well priced. I'd look into that drive.

I personally have a plextor by choice and I am very happy with it. Easy to use, fast, and reliable.

My $0.02

I beg to differ. The Sony CRX-140E may be only 8/4/32 and may not have all that fancy burn-proof stuff, but it's a good cheap burner for archiving stuff. (I only burn about 1 disc every 2 weeks)

Go ahead and flame me if you dare

Actually dont forget Yamaha, While they havent had any new products lately, their older burners easily stood side by side to plextor, and in many cases dwarfed them.

I choose TDK. It supposed to have the same hardware as the Plextor but it comes with better software package.

KarsinTheHutt: hehehe I'm with you. My personal choice is Yamaha 8x8x24, nice and cheap, fast enough and reliable. I think there are lots of good alternatives to Plextor (lots of really bad ones too though lol )

The Teac 12/10/32 sports the fastest acess times in the 12x category and is an all around great performer. People are too occupied sticking their heads up Plextor's @ss to realise that there are other drives out there that are just as great if not better than the Plextor line:Q

Did I mention that Plextor's customer support sux?:Q
