Burning Audio CD Question

I downloaded a Windows Media file that is less than 700mb. When I convert the file to CD-R, the file grows to 1200mb, which is too large for the disc. My question is: Is there a way to create "tracks" so that I can split up the large file to perhap two separate CD discs. If I'm on the wrong path, then tell me how to accomplish what I'm trying to do.

What kind of Windows media file is it? Audio or video? What program are you using to burn it so that it expands to 1200MB?

Audio file only. Tried Roxio Platinum 5 and Nero.

I thought cconverting to wav shortened the file, I use mp3 trim and mp3 direct cut to make my mp3's into tracks, don't know about wma files, guess you could convert them to mp3 and then split them into tracks.

You can decompress the file to wav and then use Audacity to cut it into shorter chunks. I'm not sure what software can decompress wmv files to wav though. Maybe the Winamp disk writer plugin?

How many minutes is the track, if it is more than 80-minutes than the size doesn't make any difference. 80 is as many as any CD-R can hold in pure Red Book (Audio CD).

burn as data. decompressing compressed audio into uncompressed cd audio creates giant files. with no more quality then the compressed file. you have no choice. that or cut the decompressed file into 80 minute chunks that will fit.
