Krakn3Dfx,
"safeburn" or "smartburn". Where can I find out for sure who makes this drive. I would like to know if this is indeed a Lite On. From what I was told by a reliable source only Lite-on 24x and the Plextor 24x are the only two CD-burners that have full DAO96 support, which defeats all current copy protection and all of the known next-gen as well, including the big current problem, SafeDisc2.

herez my story...

i went to the best buy in costa mesa in southern cali. i convinced the one of the comp guys to write me a raincheck cuz they were all out of stock. he tells me to talk to another guy to write me the raincheck. so i talk to him and he refuses to write me one. he claims that they wont match the price of other BB's. what kind of bull is that?! itz the same company but they wont sell the burner for the same price that a diff BB has.

I went to the same store in Costa Mesa and asked a BB guy and he said they were all sold out. When I mentioned checking other stores, he said they were all out too. Guess a lot of AT hot deals readers have been wearing him out!

FYI - shelf price listed the drive at $129 - 50 MIR, so $79. No mention of another $20 rebate.

I followed this thread from the begining. People said that it is the same drive as the Plexter 24X and they also said that it is the same drive as the Lite on. I checked Elaborate Bytes website for compatiblity but Only the Plextor and the Lite On and maybe a couple of others fully support every feature across the board. The TDK does not. They may be made by some of the same manufactorers but are not the same. I want a drive that will copy any protected cd I throw at it. (For back up purposes only, LOL)

Wow, I can't believe the way BB employees are. I called with the sku number for the drive just for them to do a stock check. First I waited literally for like 10 minutes on hold waiting for someone to answer the phone in the computer department. No one would pick up the phone, so I called back and tried the CSR department. Remember, I'm simply trying to get a stock check here. A girl answered the phone and said "Customer Service". Mistake number one. Is it too much for someone to answer in a professional manner and say "Customer service, this is "person's name" can I help you"? I just got "Customer Service" with a bad attitude. I asked politely, "Could you please check to see if you have this sku in stock"? The girl replies, "What's the item?" with the same bad attitude. Second mistake! She was setting me up to be transferred to the according department. This is a rookie move because it's making the customer wait and making you the rep look bad because you're deliberately passing the buck so you don't have to help someone. This is at the CSR desk folks. Totally lame! I told her the item and tried to slip in that I would like her to check because I couldn't get someone to pick up the phone in the computer department. She interupted me while I'm explaining this to her and said "no I will transfer you to the correct department". I said "Hey wait a second, all you have to do is punch in a number in your computer and tell me,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,CLICK! She hung up the phone.

This is a classic example of the experience poeple expect in this type of store now a days. I thought my generation had issues! JESUS CHRIST! FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!! Does anyone know what customer service means anymore??????

I found the receipt from the Best Buy in Thousand Oaks and am going to try to PM it later this week. I hope it works out. Even for $57 w/out the rebates, this is a great deal. I've used this burner at work and it is fast and works great on TDK blank media.

Please post updates if you have any.

I went through HELL trying to PM best buy's price today at CompUSA. But I succeeded with some help from the regional manager. Then I took my receipt over to Best Buy and PMed CompUSA's $59.97 price! So I got the drive for $55 and then $70 in rebates.

Is there a way I can also get a rebate from the CompUSA drive? I printed the rebate form from the link above and I should be able to send in for 2 rebates because I have 2 addresses. But I have a question. Should I send in another copy of my Best Buy receipt for the 2nd rebate, or should I use a copy of my CompUSA receipt (where no rebate is offered)

Thanks

<< I just picked up one of these drives today at my BB. I was there yesterday and they were out, but I went today at 10:00 a.m. and was first in line. There was one unit on the shelf. Even though the on shelf price was $149.00 I took it to the cash register. It rang up at $129.00 and then two rebates kicked out - one for $50 and one for $20 for a total of $70. So, I got the drive for $129-$70=$59.00.

Moral of the story? Just because they were out doesn't mean they won't be re-stocking at any time. Keep checking back at the store!

Are any of those instant rebates through Best Buy?
Or are they both mail in?

Guess what? BB are restocking their shelves with the TDK drives! Lots of drives in LA area. But... they won't honor the old receipts and price tag. The same runaround! Has anyone successful have a BB/CC/Compusa to pricematch today (1-9-01). I would love to get a scan of it! Please PM me. I like to shove it into the "mr. smarty" manager's face. Thanks.

If you look at the box it says "Smart-Burn" on the front.
If you read the trade mark info on the bottom of the box it says
"Smart-Burn is a trade mark of the LiteOn IT Corp"
I would say that this pretty much assures me that this is a LiteOn drive.
Unless of course they have liscened the technology.

Just because they use Lite On's Smart-Burn doesn't mean they are Lite Ons. How many different companies use BurnProof?

Can someone please put a scan of that Compusa receipt up? I dont' have access to a fax machine and would love to jump on this deal. Thanks.

Also, does this drive copy Safedisc 2 and Securom? There are 2 versions of this drive out, the Lite-On and the Sanyo.

For those who didn't get in on this deal, Compusa.com shows the drive for $99.99, with a $50 MIR.

$99 is after the rebate!

trentdoan,
Max Payne uses SafeDisk v.2.
I'm going to make a copy of it and see if it works.

Max Payne burned fine and installed fine. I used CloneCd.

between the version with BURN-proof (Sanyo) and the Smart-Burn (Lite-On), which model would you guys recommend? My brother already has a Lite-On 24x which I hear is somewhat picky over the types of cd media that it reads, so I'm a little swayed towards the Sanyo-rebadged TDK with BURN-proof. I'm thinking I could get the Sanyo and have both a Sanyo and my brother's Lite-On to get the best of both worlds......But I'd just like to hear what you guys think.

Ok guys, they have a bunch of theses in-stock at the El Cajon BB in San Diego, CA. But the price is $129 in store, then $50 rebate + $20 rebate so final price $59.99. I asked the guy if he'd give me the price for 59.99 like on sunday, but it was a no go. Damn, I totally forgot about the Fry's 109 before rebate I wonder if it's still possible. Also, anyone here PM at Compusa? They have like a ton of them for original price 129.99. They only PM other stores if the PM price is not a sale price, but I guess since the $59.99 is not a advertise sale price, it would be good right? Anyone able to do this? I was only able to pick up the drive at BB for the $129 price before rebates. I'm wondering if there's anything else I can do to make this a real hot one since like most people were not fortunate enuff to get on the no rebate $59.99 deal. Any ideas guys? Thanks a ton.

Well I just got fisted at the Buffalo NY BB. I went in, talked to a CSR, and showed them the ad. She told me to check with the computer department. I walked over, and "Eric" told me "that was a pricing error", and the ad ended on sunday, good thing I picked up 2 of them sunday night." Then I asked to speak to the manager, who shockingly, was approximately 25. He told me the exact same thing. Then I talked to another CSR and asked for a rain check. He told me he attempted to create one, but the item wasn't even showing up in the system. What a waste of time!
