Burning hot! tdk 24x burner for $57 at BB, no rebates!

I went to Best Buy today near my house, and they had 1 last one on the shelf! So I took it over to a cashier (who happenes to be a friend of my wife and I, heh, and work their CSR desk) and she did a price check and it came up for $129.99, with a $50 & $20 MIC. I told her the story about the $59.97 drive, and how Circuit City has the same one on sale. She confirmed that they will do the price match, but only if they have it in stock. She said another lady came in earlier that day, and inquired on the same deal, only to state the Circuit City near was out of stock (blah). So I went ahead and purchased the drive, and asked her "If I got one of their ads, and checked back with Circuit City as to when they will come in, will Best Buy will do the price match?" and she "Yes". But still, $60 is a darn good price for a 24x burner

My latest info.

I had a GC sitting at home the day I bought my drive for $59.99. I asked if I could bring the receipt back and apply the GC. They said yes. I brought it back tonight. I first checked the shelf for any additional drives and they were out and the price went up to $129 before $50 rebate=$79. He first credited my account the $59.99. When he started to ring the drive up it appeared at $129.99. He had a manager come by and she asked why I received it so cheap. (I only brought in the receipt and they already credited my CC, I knew I had the advantage to argue now if needed, hehe) I said that was the price on the shelf. She said no problem and signed the paper work for the kid and he continued to ring it up. When the receipts printed he said here is your receipt and rebateS. So I got the drive for $59 plus a $50 rebate and a $20 rebate. You basically get paid $10 to have the drive. So go to the store and buy a $10 GC then go to the service desk and tell them you want to apply it to your drive purchace and get both rebates. Or if your bold just take the receipt back and tell them you want your rebates. If one BB won't do it then go to another one. Good Luck!

Who makes the darn drive! Sanyo or LiteOn. My thoughts below.

First of all Burn Proof is a Sanyo product and the Liteon uses SmartBurn. I believe the original TDK 24x10x40x was called a Cyclone, it used Burn Proof. Some of these TDK drives have Smart Burn listed on front which MIGHT indicate it's a Lite On. I believe it may be.
Go to CD Clone compatibly drives Look at the modes for the Sanyo, then look at the modes for the LiteOn. Notice that the liteOn has "Correct EFM encoding of regular bit patterns" and the Sanyo does not. Notice that the TDK listed also does not(probably the older version). The thing is, Max Payne uses SafeDisk v.2 copy protection. To get past SafeDisk I think you need a "Correct EFM encoding of regular bit patterns" enabled drive. If thats true then I think we have a LiteOn drive since I was able to sucessfully copy MaxPayne. My old 8X Plextor would not and it had everything but "Correct EFM encoding of regular bit patterns". Do you follow me? One thing I know, if the box says SmartBurn on it, it sure the hell isn't a Sanyo. Why would they build a drive and then use somebody elses buffer under run technology.

I have been checking BB everyday since Sunday night. No luck in finding any in Madison, WI......until today. Shelves are full. Probably 16 at one BB. But of course the price is $129.99 - $50.00 MIR, but another $20.00 MIR prints out. I talked it all over with several managers, etc. and had all the printouts of shelf tags and receipts available, but no go. By the way if you have them check the lowest last price in the computer, it will come up as $59.97. That did impress the BB folks, but had no impact on my getting a TDK for $59.97 out the door. If anyone can do some more recent scans of purchases, it might help?

Here is a picture of the . TDK (Sanyo CRD-BP1500P)with burnproof.

Here is a picture of a LiteOn. Notice the layout of the buttons. The TDK with Smart-Burn has the exact same layout, just a different bezel. He does list it with Burnproof which it does not have. Lite On's web site list the 24X with Smart-Burn. He compares the mechanics to a Sanyo but I don't know why he says that. The drives have a different layout all together.

I picked up 2 of these TDK drives at $129 with $70 of rebates, just wondering if anyone received the drive for $59 today, and if so, could you scan your receipt with today's date (wed 1/9) so we can all price match at our best buys?

Dogcatcher was able to get the drive for $59 today, but those were under unusual circumstances.. could you post your receipt?

The woodlawn store has a few left... i wanted to get it but when i showed them the KY receipt, the manager (very nice and politely) said this might as well have been a regional sale, and he can only PM Maryland stores... I would really appreciate it....

The rest of BB employees in Maryland are dickholes......Maybe whitemarsh, which is really not that bad, but the rest....hmm....!!

My wife brought the scanned BB price tag to the MiraMesa CompUSA......total waste of time. Excuses, excuses, local BB's wouldn't answer phones to verify price and the kicker. The manager told my wife...."I can't make any money if I sell you the drive for that price." No kidding!!

She did offer to sell one for $135.00. Wow, what an offer.

I definitely have a contempt for BB, CompUSA and, especially, Fry's since I moved here but it sure as heck beats not having any stores near me in Idaho!

Yeah. I was thinking about trying Compusa at Kearny Mesa today but didn't think it'd work. I just pick one up at the BB in El Cajon since they had a bunch of them. I shoulda tried to ask them about PM Fry's 109 price b4 rebates, but I forget. Can anyone in the San Diego, Ca area know if the Fry's deal is still going on or not?

For the menber in the L.A. area, someone over on FW said he got a PM using the Thousand Oaks reciept at the Hawthorne BB store without a problem.Of course if too many prople show up with the same Thousand Oaks reciept they might think somethings wrong. Good luck!

Ripper, the Fry's ad I have in hand says good thru Tues Jan 8, 2002 but when I PM'ed at CC on Monday she didn't even look at the expiration so YMMV if you find a clerk that is in a hurry. In My experience, trying to PM to CompUSA is like pulling teeth. Staples is easiest.

Since BB's policy is like, if you see it anywhere advertised or even from BB themselves for cheaper, the'd give you the difference or something. Wow, you actually got a drive at CC on monday? the el cajon best buy actually did a price match for me against a texas store receipt a while back on the wd 100gb hard drive, it was the general manager named susan that approved it. other people (ie inventory control guy, sales manager etc) will try to bluff you with all kinda excuses, so i guess try to get a hold of susan. also bring the fry's ad with you as a last resort i'm sure they'll at least pm that plus 10% of difference.

in my experience the nicest best buy is oceanside, worst one is of course mission valley.

I actually bought the drive on Sat. ( ) Last friggin' one on the shelves at the Rosecrans CC. I went there after Mission Valley BB who don't even appear to carry the drive. I HATE that store more than NE1 on the planet. Any San Diego peeps out there have any luck with the Staples Pac Digital. If so, where? Solana Beach Staples wouldn't PM to Tanner's Sam's Club receipt but I've seen a couple of Pac Digitals at other staples so there is still time.

Checked the local Best Buy on Tuesday (Monroeville, PA). Price came up 129.99 and $59 after rebates. Think I'm going to hold off for the Yamaha 3200EZ to drop in price. Was a hot deal, but I think BB has released the $50 rebate nationally now...

Okay, found the rebates for the following:

$20 circuit city
$50 circuit city

$50 best buy

I need the $20 one from best buy... does anybody have the version from online (if it ever existed)..

I am determined to get this drive for free... right now, gonna tell the CSM that I want the price match or I want the store number and his name and I will file a formal complaint... I would even tell him that I will give him the rebate forms printed at register so as he will think I can't use the rebate, but have one printed from online.... so it would be $9.99

or maybe I will pay the 79.99 keep the $20 rebate, and use the $50 rebate from online.... but really dont' want to dish out all the money, since I am still waiting for about 8 rebates (ti200 and WD 60gig).... and right now my cc bill is kinda high, since I was planning on paying the bill off with my rebates.

If BB won't price match (for some reason or another), is there any stores you would suggest that would pricematch the 3 receipts I have for $59.97, even without rebates... I just don't want to wait the 10 weeks for them to screw up... This is Young America.... maybe I have been blacklisted from them, but their rebates are always late.
